Wolves reject Manchester city bid for Nunes

Wolves have rejected an opening bid from Manchester City worth £47m for Matheus Nunes.

Discussions remain ongoing and City are considering whether to follow up with another offer for the Portugal midfielder.

However, City have also shown in the past that they are prepared to walk away from targets if they do not agree on their valuation.

Wolves signed Nunes in a club-record £42.2m deal in August last year, paying an initial £38m plus £4.2m in add-ons.

The 24-year-old has shown glimpses of his quality, scoring a superb volley against Chelsea last season, but that remains his only goal for the club in 41 appearances.

Nunes was sent off in Wolves’ 4-1 defeat at home to Brighton on Saturday.

Man City are looking for a creative midfielder after Kevin De Bruyne was ruled out for several months with a hamstring injury he suffered in the first game of the season against Burnley.

Aymeric Laporte leaves Manchester City for Al Nassr in £23.6m move

Spain defender Aymeric Laporte has left Manchester City to join Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr in a deal worth 27.5m euros (£23.6m).

The 29-year-old joined City from Athletic Bilbao in January 2018 for a then club record £57m.
Spain defender Aymeric Laporte has left Manchester City to join Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr in a deal worth 27.5m euros (£23.6m).

The 29-year-old joined City from Athletic Bilbao in January 2018 for a then club record £57m.
He helped City win 12 major honours but made just 24 appearances as the Blues won the Treble last season.
In a goodbye message on social media, Laporte thanked fans and team-mates for an “unforgettable” time at the club.
“It has lasted five-and-a-half unforgettable years. Plenty of memories that I will keep forever close to my heart,” said Laporte.
“From trophies to setbacks, victories to injuries, it’s all been part of my journey, and I’m grateful for absolutely every moment that shaped me into who I am today.

“It was an honour and a pleasure to wear these colours and I hope you will remember me in a good way. I will always be a City fan and I look forward to seeing you all again.”
Laporte made 180 appearances for City in total, scoring 12 goals, but he found opportunities limited last season.
Coach Pep Guardiola opted to use defenders Manuel Akanji and Nathan Ake more often, and City spent £77m to bring in Croatia defender Josko Gvardiol earlier this month.

Laporte switched his international allegiance from France to Spain in May 2021 and already has 22 caps, helping them win the Uefa Nations League final in June.
He is the latest high profile player to move to Al Nassr, joining Cristiano Ronaldo, Sadio Mane, Marcelo Brozovic, Alex Telles and Seko Fofana at the club.

August 25, 2023 Manchester City sign Belgium winger from Rennes for £55.4m on a five-year contract

Manchester City sign Belgium winger from Rennes for £55.4m on a five-year contract

Manchester City have completed the signing of Belgium winger Jeremy Doku from Rennes for £55.4m.

Last season’s Treble winners have agree a five-year contract with the 21-year-old, who scored 10 goals in 75 Ligue 1 appearances across three seasons.

Doku, who has 16 caps for Belgium, has taken the number 11 shirt.

“This is a great day for me, both personally and professionally. City are the best team in world football, so joining them is special,” Doku said.

Doku becomes Pep Guardiola’s third summer signing after midfielder Mateo Kovacic arrived for £25m from Chelsea and defender former RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol joined for £77m.

West Ham, Tottenham and Chelsea had also been interested in signing Doku, who scored seven goals in 35 games last season.

Doku had two years left on the five-year deal he signed when Rennes paid 26m euros (£22.3m) to sign him from Anderlecht in October 2020, shortly after he made his international debut as a teenager.

Doku cited the opportunity to work under City boss Guardiola as a key factor in his decision to join the Premier League champions.

“I am a young player with so much learning and improving to do,” added the Antwerp-born winger.

“Working with Pep and his staff, and playing alongside these world-class players, will make me a much better player. I feel sure of that.

“Watching City last season was amazing. To win the Treble is the hardest thing in football and they did it. You cannot imagine how exciting it is to be joining this team. I cannot wait to get started. Hopefully I can make the fans happy.”

City’s director of Football Txiki Begiristain has tipped Doku to develop into a “world class” attacking player under Guardiola’s guidance.

Man City Manager Guardiola To Miss Two Matches After Back Surgery

The Premier League champions announced that Pep Guardiola will miss Manchester City’s next two matches after a “routine operation” on his back Tuesday.

City said their treble-winning manager had been suffering from “severe back pain for some time” and flew out to Barcelona for “emergency” yet “routine” surgery.

The Spanish boss will remain in Barcelona while he recovers from the operation. He is expected to miss City’s matches against Sheffield United this Sunday and Fulham on September 2, with assistant manager Juanma Lillo taking temporary charge in his absence.

City expects Guardiola, 52, to be back on the touchline after the international break for their visit to West Ham on September 16.

A Manchester City statement said: “Pep Guardiola has today (Tuesday) undergone a routine operation on a back problem.

“The Manchester City boss has been suffering from severe back pain for some time lately and flew out to Barcelona for emergency surgery by Dr Mireia Illueca. The surgery was successful, and Pep will now recover and rehabilitate in Barcelona.

“In his absence, assistant manager Juanma Lillo will oversee coaching the first team on the training field and assume duties on the touchline until Pep’s return.

“He is expected to return after the forthcoming international break. Everyone at Manchester City wishes Pep a speedy recovery and looks forward to seeing him back in Manchester soon.”
