Messi Overtakes Pele As Leading South American Men’s Goalscorer

Lionel Messi has overtaken Pele as the leading South American men's goalscorer in international matches with a hat-trick in Argentina's World Cup qualifier win against Bolivia.

Scoring all the goals in the 3-0 win in Buenos Aires brought Messi's total for Argentina to 79 in 153 games.

Brazil legend Pele finished his career on 77 international goals in 92 games.

Messi's 14th-minute goal from outside the box put him level with Pele and he broke the record in the second half.

The 34-year-old dribbled past a defender for his second goal before completing a hat-trick from a rebound two minutes before full-time.

After the match, Argentina captain Messi and his team-mates celebrated with the Copa America trophy in front of 20,000 fans at the Monumental Stadium.

He led the side to that title, his first major trophy in international football, in July, beating Brazil in the final.

"I dreamed about this day a lot and thanks to God it arrived," Messi wrote on Instagram alongside a picture of the team with the trophy after the match.

"I don't have words to thank you for all the love I've received. What a beautiful night, I enjoyed it so much - unforgettable."

Messi's 29-year-old Paris St Germain team-mate Neymar has scored 69 goals in 113 appearances for Brazil.

Argentina are second to Brazil in the South American World Cup qualifying table after winning five and drawing three games.

Marta holds the record for most goal scored by a South American player, having notched 109 for Brazil's women's team.

Lionel Messi Makes PSG Debut In Victory At Reims

Lionel Messi made his Paris St-Germain debut as a 66th-minute substitute in a 2-0 win at Reims in Ligue 1.

The Argentine, wearing his new number 30 PSG shirt, received a standing ovation as he replaced his friend Neymar in front of a sell-out crowd.

It was the first club game of his career for a team other than Barcelona.

"He is still far away from his best form but he has been training well and he will be fit in the next two weeks," boss Mauricio Pochettino told Amazon.

"We are waiting for the best from him. I'm very happy that he made his debut. It was very important for him.

"He was good, from his first touches he gave the team peace of mind. It's good for him to start with a win.

"It was good to hear the crowd cheering for him, not just our supporters, it's something Leo has earned."

Kylian Mbappe scored both goals on what could be his final appearance for the club, with Real Madrid keen to sign him before Tuesday's transfer deadline.

Lionel Messi Recieves Formal Two-Year Offer From PSG

Lionel Messi has received a formal two-year contract offer from Paris Saint-Germain.

The French club have offered Messi an initial two-year deal, thought to be worth £25m a year after tax, and the six-time Ballon d'Or winner and his representatives are now reviewing and considering it carefully.

Messi also has two other potential options after leaving Barcelona but PSG remain the favourites to sign him.

Barcelona announced Messi would not continue at the club after they were unable to fulfil a new contract that had been agreed with the player due to "financial and structural obstacles".

The Argentina international has spoken directly with PSG head coach Mauricio Pochettino this week about moving to the French capital.

Asked if PSG will be his next move at his farewell news conference on Sunday, Messi said: "That is one possibility, to reach those heights.

"I've got nothing confirmed with anybody. I had a lot of calls, a lot of interested clubs. At the moment, nothing is closed, but we are talking about a lot of things."

PSG quickly emerged as the front-runners for his signature, in a move that would reunite him with former Barcelona team-mate Neymar.

Lionel Messi Bids Tearful Goodbye To Barcelona

An emotional Lionel Messi says he did not want to leave Barcelona but that a move to Paris Saint-Germain is not confirmed.

Messi was in tears as he received a standing ovation in his final Barcelona press conference to announce the end of his 21 years with the club.

Barcelona confirmed the six-time Ballon d'Or winner's departure on Thursday night, the same day he returned to Catalonia following his post-Copa America holiday.

Messi had travelled to Barcelona expecting to agree on the details of the announcement of his new five-year deal, and he confirmed he offered to reduce his wages by 50 per cent.

"This year, my family and I were convinced we were going to stay at home, that's what we all wanted more than anything," said Messi.

"We'd always made this our own, we were at home. We thought we would be staying here in Barcelona. But today, we have to say goodbye to all of this."

Barcelona president Joan Laporta blamed Messi's exit on the former regime at the club in addition to La Liga spending rules thwarting any hopes of the Argentinian staying in Catalonia.
