Nigeria’s 6 Super Tucano Fighter Jets Finally Land In Kano

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has received six A-29 Super Tucano aircrafts expected to boost the nation's campaign against escalating insecurity.

An official induction ceremony of the aircrafts will take place next month.

The aircrafts left the United States of America last week, where they were manufactured, and transited five countries before arrival in Nigeria on Thursday, July 22, 2021.

NAF spokesperson, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, said the fighter jets arrived in Kano around noon.

They were received by top military officers led by the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Faruk Yahaya; Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Oladayo Amao, and the Minister of Defence, the retired Major General Bashir Magashi.

NAF announced last week that an official induction ceremony of the aircrafts will take place next month.

The six aircrafts are the first batch of 12 in total that the Nigerian government paid $469.4 million to the Donald Trump-led U.S. government for in 2018.

The propeller-driven aircrafts can be used for training, surveillance or attack, and can be armed with two wing-mounted machine guns and can carry up to 1,550 kg (3,417 pounds) of weapons.

The contract was awarded to Sierra Nevada Corporation, and also provides for ground training equipment, mission planning systems, mission debrief systems, spares, ground support equipment and support services for NAF personnel.

The President Muhammadu Buhari-led government hopes the aircrafts will improve national security and help in the country's fight against terrorist group, Boko Haram.

Bola Tinubu Says Lagos And Kano States Have Roles To Play In Championing Peace In The Country

The National leader of the ruling All Progressive Congress, BOLA TINUBU, has said that Lagos and Kano states have critical roles to play in championing peace and unity of the country due to the cosmopolitan nature of both states.

TINUBU, who spoke at the Kano Emirate Council when he paid a visit to the Emir of Kano, Alhaji AMINU BAYERO, said Nigeria needed unity and peace as the basic tonic to overcome ongoing challenges.

He said, Nigeria is at a critical stage of its life noting peace and development will continue to be a mirage if the nation continues the way it is going.

In his remarks, Emir AMINU ADO-BAYERO, commended TINUBU for choosing Kano to celebrate his 69th birthday, saying such was a testimony to unity and love he had for Nigeria.

He said traditional leaders were ready to give all the necessary support Nigeria required for unity and understanding among tribes and religions.

Muslims in Kano, Katsina Others defy NCDC Protocol; Trooped Out For Eid Prayers

Muslims in Kano,  Katsina, Borno,  Zamfara and Bauchi states yesterday trooped out in large numbers to observe the Eid prayers in their different localities.

This was contrary to the directive of the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji SA’AD ABUBAKAR, and the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, which directed that there should be no large gatherings at Eid prayers.

It was observed that there were massive gatherings with the majority of the faithful not observing the PTF’s protocols such as social distancing and wearing of face masks.

Sokoto state Governor AMINU WAZIRI TAMBUWAL after the eid prayers urged residents to pray for sustained peace in the country.

Recall that states, including Kano, Katsina, Borno and Yobe, last week relaxed the Federal Government’s lockdown and allowed religious organisations to hold their congregational activities.
