Human Rights Lawyer, Femi Falana, Warns Nigerian Leaders Against Provoking Citizens Into Revolt

Human Rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has said that the high level of poverty in Africa is responsible for the wave of coups in the continent.

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria stated this at a Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) national symposium held in Abuja, under the theme: “Nigerian Economy and the Crisis of Survival, Robbing the Poor to Pay the Rich”.

Falana stressed that despite the poverty in the country, the National Assembly allocated billions to itself.

He subsequently cautioned Nigerian governments against taking the citizens for granted.

His comment comes on the heels of recent coups in Africa. The latest in Gabon where soldiers seized power, ending decades of the Bongo dynasty’s reign.

In his own remarks at the event, NLC President, Joe Ajaero, spoke on the unworkability of government measures to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal on Nigerians.

Reactions Trail NlLC’s Threat Of Total Shutdown Of Country If Fuel Price Hike Is Increased Again

Reactions have continued to trail Organized Labour’s comment that it will embark on a total and indefinite shutdown of the country, if the government allows a fresh increase in Petrol price from 617 naira per litre.

It would be recalled that Labour had earlier suspended a nationwide protest scheduled for Thursday, August 4, following a meeting with President Bola Tinubu.

However, the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, said the labour force cannot afford another hike in fuel in the present economic state.

Speaking on the incessant friction between government and Labour over fuel price, a Lawyer with bias for Oil and Gas, Emeka Osuji, harped on what must be done to stem the tide.
