92,845 Nigerians Submit Online Applications For INEC Voter Registration

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has received 92,845 online applications nationwide within 48 hours of resumption of its Continuous Voter Registration (CVR).

It disclosed that of the 92,845 applications received, 63,437 were for new voter pre-registration, while 997 of the applications were requests for uncollected Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

It noted that at that about 7 a.m 3,958 applications were received for voter transfer.

The commission disclosed that 826 of the applications were for the replacement of lost or damaged PVCs.

The statistics also show that 21,745 applications were for voter record review, while 1,882 were for review of information.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the online registration started on June 28, while physical registration at INEC local government and state offices would commence on July 19.

INEC To Resume The Continuous Voter Registration Ahead Of The 2023 General Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission will today, resume the Continuous Voter Registration ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Recall that the commission had created 56, 872 additional polling units across the country.

It had also accredited 31 organizations to observe the CVR, while 20 more applications were being processed.

According to the commission, the registration, which will be carried out continuously for over a year until the third quarter of 2022, will be targeting at least 20 million new voters.

While threatening to prosecute any citizens who provided false information during the exercise, INEC had said it would be deploying 5346 officials to 2673 registration centres

INEC chairman, Prof. MAHMOOD YAKUBU, also said the security of the personnel was very paramount.

Just In: INEC Creates Additional 56,872 Polling Units

Ahead of the 2023 general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission on Wednesday announced the creation of additional 56, 872 polling units across the country.

The Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, stated this at a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners.

According to him, Nigeria now has a total of 176, 846 Polling Units from the initial 119, 973 following the conversion of voting points and voting points settlement to full-fledged Polling Units.

Yakubu said the commission had also removed 749 Polling Units from inappropriate facilities, with nine of them from shrines and several others from religious houses, royal palaces and private property.

Fire Razes INEC Office In Enugu

The office of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Obollo-Afor, Udenu local government area of Enugu State has been razed down by midnight fire.

The cause of the fire, which was said to have occurred late on Thursday is not known yet.

The police confirmed the fire incident In a statement by the Enugu police spokesman, Daniel Ndukwe, titled, ‘Fire incident at INEC office in Obollo-Afor: CP orders the conduct of the thorough investigation to ascertain the cause of the fire outbreak and damages incurred’.

The statement noted that the combined effort of the state fire service, residents, and security agents prevented the fire from razing other offices.

The statement read in part, “Following a distress call received at Udenu Police Divisional Headquarters of Enugu State Command on 13/05/2021 at about 2140hrs, alleging that there was fire outbreak at the Obollo-Afor Office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Udenu L.G.A. of the State,

“Operatives attached to the Division immediately raced to the scene, while contacting Fire Service Office in the area to promptly put out the fire.

“Preliminary investigation suggests that the fire, which was eventually put out before it could spread to other offices around the building, through the combined efforts of the State Fire Service, the Police and law-abiding citizens, may have been caused by power surge due to sudden power supply to the building.

“Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Aliyu, has ordered the cordoning off of the scene and launch of thorough investigation to further ascertain the actual cause of the fire outbreak and damages incurred.”
