Emefiele Begs NLC To Shelve Protest Over Naira Scarcity

The governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele has appealed to the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, to prevail on the leadership of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) over its planned protest slated for Wednesday.

The leadership of NLC had last Friday mobilized its affiliate unions and the State Councils to shut down offices of the apex bank nationwide over current cash scarcity in the country.

But in a closed-door meeting at the headquarters of Ministry of Labour and Employment in Abuja, Emefiele was quoted as saying the protest would hinder the progress of the apex bank if not averted.

The President of NLC, Joe Ajaero led other Labour leaders while Emefiele led the apex bank officials to the meeting that was later presided over by the Minister.

An official of the ministry, who craved anonymity, said Emefiele promised to ensure that all commercial banks were given enough cash from the CBN’s vault.

None of those in attendance spoke to journalists after the closed-door meeting.

CBN Governor Unable To Appear Before House Of Reps

The Central Bank of Nigeria has said the apex bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele will not appear before the House of Representatives tomorrow as scheduled.

It said Emefiele will be represented by the Deputy Governor, Financial System Stability, CBN, Aisha Ahmad.

In the latest letter the House received from the Deputy Governor, Corporate Services, CBN, Edward Adamu, Emefiele was said to be ill and would not appear before the lawmakers in person; the second time, Emefiele failed to appear before the House.

Following the reading of the letter at plenary yesterday, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Idris Wase argued that the representative could be considered if capable.

Following arguments, the lawmakers rescheduled his appearance for Thursday, insisting on suspension of the cash withdrawal limits set by the Apex Bank.

Court Stops DSS From Arresting Emefiele

A federal high court sitting in Abuja has declined an application by the Department of State Services (DSS) to arrest and detain the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele.

In declining the motion ex parte — filed by an applicant in the absence of the respondent — the chief judge, Justice John Tsoho, said the secret police did not provide any concrete evidence to substantiate its claims that Emefiele was involved in terrorism financing and economic crimes.

The court said such an application should have been accompanied with the presidential approval because of the grave implications for the Nigerian economy if the CBN governor is arrested and detained.

There are suggestions that the bid to arrest Emefiele might be political given the impact the redesign of the naira and limit on cash withdrawals might have on vote-buying in the 2023 elections.

Earlier on Monday, a group of civil society organizations had raised the alarm that there was a plot to frame Emefiele for terrorism and remove him from office.

Meanwhile, DSS has warned Nigerians against being used to undermine its investigations.

In a statement, DSS spokesperson, Peter Afunanya, said the service will not be distracted by those seeking to use “propaganda” to undermine its lawful investigations.

Reps Postpone Emefiele’s Appearance To Tuesday

The House of Representatives has postponed the appearance of the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, to next week.

The appearance was rescheduled after Emefiele notified the lawmakers that he travelled with President Muhammadu Buhari to Washington.

It would be recalled that Emefiele was asked to appear before the House to explain the new withdrawal limit policy.

His letter was read by Deputy Speaker, Idris Wase, who presided over Thursday’s session.

The lawmakers subsequently resolved that the CBN governor must appear on Tuesday to brief the entire House.
