Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson added to England squad for Nations League

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has been added to the England squad for Nations League
games against Italy and Germany.
Henderson, 32, was not named in Gareth Southgate’s initial squad because of a hamstring injury.
However, the midfielder has now recovered and has joined up with the squad at St George’s
Park.
He replaces Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips, who withdrew over the weekend with a shoulder
problem.
Henderson, who has 69 caps, has missed Liverpool’s last three matches after being injured
during their 2-1 win against Newcastle United at Anfield on 31 August.
He has made only one appearance for England in 2022 – a 2-1 friendly win against Switzerland at
Wembley in March.
England face European champions Italy at the San Siro in Milan on Friday and Germany at
Wembley on Monday.

England Suffer Heavy Home Defeat To Hungary In Nations League

England's poor Nations League run continued as they slumped to their worst home defeat since 1928 against a ruthless Hungary to leave Gareth Southgate's side condemned to the bottom of Group A3.

The Three Lions have now gone four games without a single win for the first time since 2014 and look increasingly out of form and confidence with a World Cup looming at the end of this year.

England gaffer Gareth Southgate made nine changes to the side that drew with Italy and his did start with some attacking intent when Reece James, from left-back, combined well with Kane before lofting a ball to the back post, where Bowen was unable to turn it in but any desire to take the lead was slowly snuffed out as the hosts capitulated under a flurry of attacks from the Hungarians.

Freiburg forward Roland Sallai put the visitors in front with a well-taken finish at the back post, then doubled Hungary's lead with his second on the break 20 minutes from time.

There was more to come from a rampant Hungary who seemed to relish their impressive display early on as Zsolt Nagy fired in from range and - after John Stones was sent off to compound a woeful evening for the hosts - Daniel Gazdag finished smartly to wrap up a second historic win over England in 10 days.

Jarrod Bowen had earlier missed a decent chance at the back post from Reece James' cross and Harry Kane flicked a header against the bar, but the hosts once again lacked the belief and inventiveness to open up their opposition.

Hungary - who top a group that also includes Germany and Italy - were well organised and clinical to earn only their second win over the Three Lions on English soil and first since a famous 6-3 success at Wembley in 1953.

John Stones Returns To Man City After Picking Up Injury

John Stones has left the England camp and will return to Manchester City as a precaution after picking up an injury before the friendly with Switzerland on Saturday.

The Manchester City centre-half pulled out of the warm-up before the 2-1 victory at Wembley but trained with the rest of the team on Monday ahead of their second match of the March international break against Ivory Coast on Tuesday.

Stones went for a scan after training on Monday and was given the all-clear to play in Tuesday's friendly, but the 27-year-old insists something does not feel right and will miss the fixture and return to his club.

England boss Gareth Southgate still has plenty of centre-back options at his disposal for the visit of the Ivory Coast, with Tyrone Mings and Harry Maguire looking for Wembley starts after sitting on the bench against Switzerland.

Arsenal defender Ben White replaced Stones just before kick-off in that game, while Marc Guehi and Conor Coady also started for the Three Lions.

Stones will also be needed for a crunch Premier League and Champions League run-in with Manchester City, as the fixture list looks to pile up for Pep Guardiola's men.

City visit Burnley this Saturday before Champions League quarter-final ties against Atletico Madrid encircle a mouth-watering clash with Premier League rivals Liverpool on April 10.
