Messi Scores 650th Barcelona Goal In Victory Against Bilbao

Lionel Messi scored his 650th goal for Barcelona with a wonderful free-kick as they beat Athletic Bilbao to move up to second in La Liga.

Athletic had a five-man wall, a player lying behind the wall and another on the line but Messi still managed to curl the ball into the top corner - his 49th free-kick goal for the club.

Athletic were level when Jordi Alba turned a cross into his own net.

But Antoine Griezmann slammed in the winner from Oscar Mingueza's pass.

Barcelona move above Real Madrid on goal difference, but the rivals both sit 10 points behind Atletico Madrid - who have a game in hand on both sides and who defeated Cadiz earlier in the day.

Ronald Koeman's side seem to be over their dreadful start to the season with eight wins and two draws in their past 10 La Liga games.

Barcelona's day ended better than it started, with the club denying leaking details of Messi's contract to El Mundo.

The club plan legal action after the Spanish newspaper published details of his £492m contract.

Messi Fires Barcelona To Come-Back Victory In Copa Del Rey

Lionel Messi inspired a Barcelona fightback on his return from suspension as they beat Rayo Vallecano to reach the Copa del Rey quarter-finals.

Rayo, who are fourth in the Spanish second tier, took a shock lead when Fran Garcia tapped in a loose ball.

Barca hit back six minutes later when Messi, back from a two-game ban after his first red card for the club, slotted in Antoine Griezmann's pass.

Frenkie de Jong's composed close-range finish ensured Barca avoided a shock.

Barca captain Messi was also the architect for the winner, releasing substitute Jordi Alba down the left to provide a low cross that was met by De Jong's perfectly timed run.

The Catalan club have won the Copa del Rey on a record 30 occasions and the competition looks to be their best chance to claim a trophy in Ronald Koeman's first season as manager.

The Dutchman admitted as much going to the tie, with his side 10 points adrift of La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid and not considered among the favorites for the Champions League - especially as they face French champions Paris St-Germain in the last 16.

Pandemic Set To Cost Top European Clubs Excess

The coronavirus pandemic will cost Europe's 20 richest football clubs over £1.7bn by the end of this season.

The Deloitte Football Money League survey found the clubs had already lost around £976m up to the end of the extended 2019-20 season.

Clubs have suffered considerable losses on both broadcast and matchday revenue.

Barcelona generated more money than any other club in Europe, but still had the second-largest revenue fall in absolute terms.

The Catalan club saw a drop from £741.1m to £627.1m but remain narrowly ahead of La Liga rivals Real Madrid, whose revenue fell from £667.5m to £627m.

Bayern Munich (£556.1m), Manchester United (£509m) and Liverpool (£489.9m) make up the top five with Liverpool moving up from seventh last year, replacing Paris St-Germain.

Manchester City, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Juventus make up the remainder of the top 10.

Eighteen of the 20 clubs retain their places from last year's survey - with Zenit St Petersburg (15th - £207.4m) and Eintracht Frankfurt (20th - £152.6) replacing AS Roma and West Ham United.

Barcelona Edge Past 3rd Tier Side Cornella In Copa Del Rey

Barcelona missed two penalties before edging into the Copa del Rey last 16 with two extra-time goals against third-tier Cornella.

Miralem Pjanic and Ousmane Dembele were both denied from the spot by Cornella goalkeeper Ramon Juan in normal time.

The 21-year-old is the first keeper ever to save two Barca penalties in one game.

Dembele made amends with a long-range strike two minutes into extra time, while Martin Braithwaite added a second after Albert Estelles was sent off.

Barcelona had reason to be apprehensive going into the tie, as Cornella - who play in Segunda Division B - had knocked out current La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid in the previous round.

In addition, Barca's tie was played the evening after their great rivals Real Madrid had suffered Copa del Rey humiliation, having been beaten by third-tier side Alcoyano - who scored their winning goal after being reduced to 10 men.

But Ronald Koeman's men - taken to extra time in their previous two games, both in the Spanish Super Cup - came through another 120-minute test to avoid a similar upset.

They now turn their attention back to La Liga duties with an away game with Elche on Saturday.

Koeman will still be without Lionel Messi, however, as the Barcelona captain serves the second of his two-game ban for his red card against Athletic Bilbao in the Super Cup final, which his team lost.
