Obaseki To Open Defence On Alleged Certificate Forgery Today January 5

Governor GODWIN OBASEKI of Edo will today January 5 open his defence at the Federal High Court, Abuja, in the ongoing alleged certificate forgery suit filed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) against him.

The trial judge, Justice AHMED MOHAMMED, adjourned the matter on Monday for OBASEKI to open his defence on January 5, after the APC closed its case after calling six witnesses.

The APC and one of its chieftains, Mr WILLIAMS EDOBOR, dragged OBASEKI to court for allegedly forging his University of Ibadan degree certificate.

Other defendants in the suit are the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and INEC.

The fifth and sixth witnesses, Mr Gabriel Iduseri and Mr Maikano Asekomhe, in their testimonies, claimed that Obaseki forged his University of Ibadan certificate because of alleged discrepancies in the Certified True Copies (CTC) they said they obtained from INEC.

Iduseri who claimed to be the current Caretaker Zonal Youth leader of the APC, however, admitted that he had never seen Obaseki’s original University of Ibadan degree certificate.

He also stated that his allegations were based on photocopies obtained from INEC.

Similarly, Asekomhe, who claimed to be an Associate Professor of Banking and Finance at the Benson Idahosa University, Benin, also said he had never seen Obaseki's original certificate.

He said he could, therefore, not comment on the original certificate.

At the end of cross examination of the sixth witness, lead counsel to the APC, Mr Akin Olujimi (SAN), informed the court that his clients were through with their case and would want to close it.

Justice Mohammed subsequently ordered that the case of the plaintiffs be closed and ordered the first defendant, Obaseki, to open his case on the next adjourned date.

Meanwhile, Justice Mohammed, in a judgment delivered on Monday, struck out the case of the National Rescue Movement against the nomination of Mr Osagie Ize-Iyamu and AbdulGaniyu Daudu as governor and deputy governorship candidates respectively of the APC in the September 19, 2020 governorship election in Edo.

The judge struck out the case on the grounds that the case had become an academic exercise.

He said this was because the election had been conducted, winners emerged and Ize-Iyamu and Daudu were not challenging the outcome of the polls at the ongoing election petition tribunal in Edo.

APC lagos asks opposition, PDP to accept defeat in the bye-elections in good fate

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has likened the humiliating defeat suffered by the Peoples Democratic Party in the bye-elections conducted over the weekend as a comic relief from the recent pressure and challenges.

The state chairman of the PDP, ADEDEJI DOHERTY had in a statement described the election as a charade, accusing INEC of allocating votes to the APC.

He however said that relevant lessons have been learnt assuring that Lagos will be rescued from APC and its leadership, that have held down the State for over twenty years.

But in his reaction, the spokesman of the ruling APC, SEYE OLADEJO said it was a big surprise that the state chairman of the PDP could complain about the results of the elections that he was too busy to campaign for his candidates.

While they were busy conducting fake personal opinion polls, the ruling APC was reaching out to the voters with life changing programs, manifestos and policies that are relevant to the challenges of the day.

INEC on Sunday morning declared the candidates of the APC in the Lagos East Senatorial District and Kosofe Constituency two bye-elections, TOKUNBO ABIRU and FEMI SAHEED winners of the exercise.

Edo State, APC Primary Election Underway

The All Progressives Congress primary election to choose the candidate for the September 19 gubernatorial poll in Edo state is underway.

Pastor OSAGIE IZE-IYAMU and PIUS ODUBU are the two aspirants to slug it out for the party’s ticket in 192 wards of 18 Local Governments in the state.

The State APC governorship election committee headed by the Imo State Governor, HOPE UZODINMA, released guidelines for the party primary election insisting that the exercise would hold as scheduled.

He said its guidelines were in compliance with the state government’s COVID-19 regulations.

But the factional chairman of the APC in Edo State, ANSLEM OJEZUA, rejected the HOPE UZODINMA-led committee noting the purported inauguration was done during the suspension of its National chairman, ADAMS OSHIOMHOLE.

In a swift reaction, DANIEL OSA-OGBEGIE says all is well with the party.

On its part, the state government said, in compliance with its COVID-19 law, the APC must apply for a waiver before organising a political gathering in any part of the state.
