Andy Murray Handed Wildcard For Cincinnati Open

Britain's Andy Murray has been given a wild card to compete in the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati later this month.

34-year-old Murray pulled out of the individual event at the Olympics citing a minor thigh strain, to focus on the doubles.

Murray and Joe Salisbury ended up losing in the quarter-finals at Tokyo 2020 on 28 July.

The tournament in Cincinnati starts on 14 August prior to the US Open in New York getting underway on 30 August.

Murray won in Cincinnati in 2008 and 2011, and he beat Alexander Zverev to reach the third round in the tournament last year when it was played in New York because of the coronavirus pandemic.

American 21-year-old Sebastian Korda, son of former Australian Open champion Petr, has also been given a wildcard for the event.

Andy Murray's bid for an Olympic gold at a third successive outing ended as he and Joe Salisbury lost in the men's doubles quarter-finals in Tokyo.

The British pair lost 4-6 7-6 (7-2) 10-7 against Croatia's Marin Cilic and Ivan Dodig in the quarter-finals.

34-year-old Murray, and Salisbury, a doubles specialist who reached a career-high ranking of three last year, were playing their first event together.

Cilic and Dodig will proceed to face New Zealand's Michael Venus and Marcus Daniell next.

Murray, who won the singles at London 2012 and Rio 2016, pulled out of the individual event with a minor thigh strain to focus on the doubles.

The three-time Grand Slam singles champion forged an impressive partnership with 29-year-old Salisbury, who won his maiden major doubles title at last year's Australian Open.

But they could not build on a lead of a set and a break as Cilic and Dodig turned the match around and eventually defeated the British pair.

Andy Murray Into Wimbledon Third Round After Victory Over Oscar Otte

Britain's Andy Murray defied the odds yet again as he reached the Wimbledon third round by beating German qualifier Oscar Otte in another thriller which finished under the Centre Court lights.

The Scot led by a set and a break but momentum switched to Otte, an SW19 debutant ranked 151st in the world.

Murray, 34, looked weary as Otte won the third set for a 2-1 lead, before darkness forced the pair off court.

But with the crowd behind him, Murray fought back to win 6-3 4-6 4-6 6-4 6-2.

It was another incredible evening for Murray at the All England Club, coming just 48 hours after the two-time champion had beaten Georgian 24th seed Nikoloz Basilashvili.

February 5, 2021 Andy Murray To Make Playing Return In Italy

Andy Murray To Make Playing Return In Italy

Andy Murray has travelled to Italy and will make his return in qualifying for an ATP Challenger tournament.

Murray, 33, is able to play in Biella next week because a quarantine waiver has been agreed for players travelling from outside the European Union.

Otherwise, they have to self-isolate for two weeks.

Britain's Murray had already entered the second of two Challenger tournaments, which begins in the small northern Italian city on 15 February.

But, with places in the main draw for next week's tournament already assigned, the former world number one will have to go through qualifying.

When Murray last played on the Challenger Tour in Mallorca in August 2019, it was his first appearance on the lower circuit for 14 years.

He reached the third round in a tournament staged during the first week of the US Open.

In Biella next week he will once again find himself playing on the Challenger Tour as a Grand Slam gets under way elsewhere.

But, after a positive Covid test ruled Murray out of the Australian Open, he is desperate for matches.

Murray suffered no ill-effects from Covid, and has been back in full training for nearly two weeks.

His schedule after Biella may depend on how many matches he plays in Italy, but he could return to the ATP Tour in Montpellier on 22 February.
