May 9, 2024 Proprietor of Demolished Beach Establishment Support Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road

Bolaji Ariyo, the Chief Executive Officer of Mami Chula Beach and one of the affected property owners in the construction of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road has expressed support for the project, emphasizing its potential benefits for millions of people.

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, announced last week that the Federal Government would compensate property owners affected by the demolition required for the construction, spanning from channel 0 to channel 3. During a stakeholder meeting in Lagos State, Umahi urged stakeholders to avoid politicizing the project and recognized Ariyo, a Yoruba man, as the largest property owner affected.

In a widely circulated video interview, Ariyo voiced his alignment with the project's vision, even if it causes inconvenience for a small number of individuals. He emphasized understanding the government's commitment to improving the lives of Nigerians, noting that the number of affected individuals is minimal compared to the millions who stand to benefit from the coastal roads. Ariyo urged people to support the President and the Minister to ensure the project's success.

Addressing journalists, the Minister clarified that no structures belonging to the Landmark Beach Resort were demolished, only shanties erected on the government's right of way were affected. He reiterated that the construction aims to pass through the government's legitimate right-of-way within the coastal corridor. Despite protests from Landmark employees opposing the sand filling of the beach for road construction, the Minister affirmed his commitment to completing the coastal road project.
