November 16, 2023 No Plans To Merge With PDP – LP

The Labour Party (LP) clarified on Thursday that it has no intentions of merging with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.

This comes in response to the suggestion made by the PDP's presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, who proposed that opposition parties unite to defeat the APC in the upcoming presidential poll.

In a statement issued by LP spokesman Obiora Ifoh, the party emphasized that it has not engaged in any discussions regarding a merger. Ifoh acknowledged Atiku's call as a proposal, stating, "Every Nigerian should be interested in making democracy work in Nigeria, and what we have presently is an autocracy."

Ifoh stressed that the response provided by the LP did not mention any purported merger between the LP and PDP. The party is focused on the broader goal of strengthening democracy in the country.

Meanwhile, the APC criticized Atiku's merger plan, asserting that he still grappled with his loss in the presidential poll. In a statement by the APC's National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the APC suggested that the PDP should concentrate on resolving its internal party crisis rather than considering merger strategies.

The political landscape continues to evolve, with parties expressing divergent views on potential alliances and strategies leading up to the 2027 elections.
