April 12, 2024 No Plan To Boycott NPFL Matches

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) is set to proceed with its Match-day 30 games scheduled for this weekend, dismissing rumors of a potential boycott by clubs over financial disputes.

A chairman of a club in the northern region clarified the situation, stating that there is no intention to boycott the matches and that preparations for the weekend fixtures are underway. Similarly, players from clubs in the southwest region confirmed their commitment to participating in the upcoming matches, emphasizing that training sessions have proceeded as usual.

Reports had emerged suggesting a possible standoff between NPFL clubs and the league's board regarding undisclosed broadcast deals with StarTimes and Propel Sports, as well as financial obligations promised at the beginning of the season. However, the NPFL club owner’s association has denied any such grievances, asserting that there are no outstanding issues.

Match-day 30 action kicks off on Saturday with three matches, followed by additional fixtures on Sunday. Exciting matchups include Doma United hosting Remo Stars in Gombe, Enugu Rangers facing Abia Warriors at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, and Sporting Lagos taking on Sunshine Stars in a southwest derby at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos.

As the 2023/24 season progresses towards its conclusion on June 9th, clubs are gearing up for the remaining matches. Rivers United, recently eliminated from the CAF Confederation Cup, also have six outstanding fixtures to complete within the allocated timeframe.

At the commencement of the season last September, strategic partners of the NPFL, GTI, announced an increase in the league's prize money from N100 million to N150 million, along with a N10 million take-off grant for the participating clubs. Additionally, the NPFL secured a $5 million streaming deal with Propel Sports and a N5.9 billion broadcasting deal over five seasons with StarTimes for league coverage on its cable channel.
