November 7, 2023 NLC, TUC Summon Extraordinary NEC Meeting Over Wednesday Strike

In preparation for the nationwide strike scheduled for Wednesday, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have called for an extraordinary National Executive Council (NEC) meeting.

During this meeting, organized labour will assess the planned strike's details, considering recent events such as the attack on NLC's National President, Joe Ajaero. Additionally, they will review the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Federal Government and Organized Labor on October 2, 2023, in response to the fuel subsidy removal.

Tommy Etim, TUC's National Vice President, announced this on Tuesday. Last week, the organised labour issued a five-day ultimatum before their protest following the arrest of Joe Ajaero in Owerri, Imo State.

Their demands include the redeployment of the state's police commissioner and the arrest and prosecution of the governor's aide allegedly involved in the attack. If their demands are not met within five days, the unions have threatened to strike nationwide. Ajaero's arrest by the police occurred in advance of the state-wide protest in Imo.
