March 20, 2024 NLC Pickets Labour Party HQ, Demands Abure’s Removal

Tensions between the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Labour Party (LP) escalated on Wednesday when NLC members staged a protest at the party's headquarters in the Utako area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

Led by Theophilus Ndubuaku, the acting chairman of the NLC's Political Commission, union members called for the immediate resignation of Julius Abure, citing concerns over his legitimacy as the national chairman of the Labour Party.

Ndubuaku asserted that Abure's leadership and the planned convention of the party were deemed illegal by the NLC. The scheduled convention, purportedly set to take place in Umuahia, the capital of Abia State, on March 27, was accused of being orchestrated to re-elect Abure as the party's sole administrator, amidst allegations of secrecy surrounding the event.

In response, the NLC demanded the establishment of a caretaker transition committee to facilitate a legitimate and inclusive national convention for the party.

Despite the absence of party officials at the headquarters, NLC leaders occupied the premises, with the Nigeria Police Force monitoring to prevent vandalism.

Chanting songs against Abure, the union members expressed grievances, alleging financial mismanagement by the party chairman.
