May 8, 2024 Mother and Son Die from Generator Fumes in Delta State, Daughter Hospitalized

The Delta State Police command has issued a cautionary message regarding the hazards of generator fumes and urged the public to exercise caution. This advisory follows a tragic incident where a mother and her son lost their lives due to generator fumes inside their residence during rainfall.

In a statement released by the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, it was revealed that the mother and son passed away two days prior in Asaba, the state capital, while the daughter is presently undergoing medical treatment at a nearby hospital.

The statement emphasized the lethal nature of generator fumes, stating, "Generator fumes are dangerous. They are lethal!!! A mother and son tragically lost their lives in Asaba two days ago, while her daughter is currently receiving medical attention at the hospital."

Detailing the circumstances of the incident, the statement continued, "What led to this tragedy? While the generator was operational, rainfall began, prompting them to relocate the generator indoors and continue using it. Regrettably, they fell asleep, leading to their demise due to suspected carbon monoxide poisoning from the generator emissions. The daughter was promptly rushed to the hospital."

Highlighting the recurrent nature of such incidents in Delta State, the statement concluded with a call for awareness and education, stating, "This is not an isolated occurrence in Delta. It is imperative that we remain informed, educate ourselves, and enlighten others about these dangers."
