December 21, 2022 Lionel Messi’s Instagram Post Becomes The Most ‘Liked’ Post On Social Media

Argentina won the FIFA World Cup in Qatar this year, headed by Lionel Messi, widely recognized as the Greatest of All Time. Now, his Instagram post commemorating the team’s historic victory has set new marks.

Messi’s Instagram picture, which contains a gallery of the player holding the trophy and with his teammates, is currently the most liked post on the platform. At the time of writing, the post has over 67.7 million likes, breaking the record previously held by the iconic egg.

After being uploaded in 2019, a mystery picture of a basic egg received 57 million likes. The picture gripped the internet, maybe because so little was known about the post and its account user. In reaction to Messi’s victory, the account (aptly named @world record egg) posted a Story congratulating him.

“Four years ago we set out on a mission, nine days later we made internet history. Together 🤍,” reads the egg’s Story text “Today @leomessi has taken the crown (for now 👀).”

With this, Messi’s 57 million likes seem to have eclipsed the most-liked post on every major social media network. On Twitter, the record is 7 million for a message reporting the terrible death of Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman. Luis Fonsi’s music video for “Despacito” has 50 million views on YouTube. The post also outperformed Bella Poarch’s incredibly popular TikTok from 2020, which has over 60 million likes.
