November 14, 2023 Labour Minister, Simon Lalong, Meets Labour Leaders As Nationwide Strike Begins

Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, have made good their threat by embarking on a nationwide strike from midnight, over the assault on NLC President, Joe Ajaero on November 1st, as well as pending labour issues in Imo State.

Organized Labour had on November 7th, threatened a nationwide strike by Tuesday, November 14, if their demands are not met.

 

Recall that Ajaero alongside other Labour leaders who had gathered at the NLC State secretariat in Imo for a scheduled protest on November 1, were assaulted allegedly by agents of state.

 

The Labour Leaders were in Owerri to protest among other grievances backlog of unpaid salaries and allowances, Pensions, gratuities and non-compliance with the National Minimum Wage Act.

 

TUC President, Festus Osifo, who had earlier addressed reporters said the strike would remain total until governments accede to their demands.
A cross section of callers on our political programme, All out Politics, expressed divergent opinions on the strike by Organized Labour.

The Minister of Labour, Employment and Productivity, Simon Lalong has reportedly convened a meeting with labour leaders as the nationwide strike begins.

Leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC and the Trade Union Congress, TUC are expected at the meeting later today.
