April 30, 2024 Gunmen Kidnap Nigerian Singer, Demand $200,000 for Ransom

In Delta State, unidentified gunmen have abducted up-and-coming Nigerian singer Gnewzy, whose real name is Emuemu Goodnews. The kidnappers are requesting a ransom of $200,000 (equivalent to over N220 million).

Gnewzy, known for his hit single 'Sneakers' and signed to Eric Many Records in December 2023, was taken in the early hours of Monday after performing at a Homecoming concert at Monaco nightclub in Ughelli, Delta State.

Eric Many Records, through its spokesperson Adedayo Showemimo, expressed deep concern over the incident. The singer's manager, Obas9ice, narrowly escaped a similar fate on Eklat road in Ughelli.

The abduction occurred on Eklat Road in Ughelli while Gnewzy was returning home from a show on Monday morning. The abductors contacted Dilly Umenyiora, the CEO of the record label, via email, laying out their demands.

During an interview, Umenyiora expressed his distress, stating his dilemma over whether to pay the ransom. He emphasized the complexities, including contractual obligations and concerns for Gnewzy's safety.

Delta State police spokesperson Bright Edafe confirmed the ongoing investigation by law enforcement agencies into the matter. Kidnapping for ransom remains prevalent in Delta State and other regions of Nigeria, despite efforts by authorities to combat the issue.
