December 19, 2023 Fubara, Wike Sign Agreement To Resolve Rivers Crisis After Tinubu’s Intervention

The political crisis in Rivers State may have been put to rest after Rivers State governor Sim Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, signed a truce agreement at a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Aso Villa yesterday.

Also present at the meeting were Vice President Kashim Shettima, the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, former River’s governor, S, and some traditional rulers from the state.

The rift between Wike and Fubara had split lawmakers in the House, with 27 of them decamping from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The rift also saw the emergence of the parallel house of assembly sittings, an impeachment plot against the governor, the demolition of the Assembly complex, and a gale of resignations of some commissioners in Fubara’s cabinet.

Following the meeting, the warring parties agreed that all matters instituted in the courts by Fubara and his team be withdrawn immediately.

It was also agreed that all impeachment proceedings initiated against the governor by the Rivers State House of Assembly be dropped immediately, and all parties recognise the leadership of Martin Amaewhule in the Rivers State House of Assembly, amongst others.

The two camps also agreed to recognise the 27 lawmakers who recently resigned from the PDP to the APC.

Callers on Inspiration FM’s breakfast show, The Big Story, shared their opinions on the development.
