January 18, 2024 Federal Government Ammends Charges Against Former CBN Governor

The Federal Government has amended the criminal charges filed against the former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele, from six to twenty.

The government had initially filed 19 charges against the former CBN governor bordering on procurement fraud but later pruned it down to six and now amended to twenty.

The amended charges against Emefiele now include criminal breach of trust, forgery, conspiracy to commit forgery, procurement fraud, and conspiracy to commit a felony.

The Federal Capital Territory High Court also granted the request of a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, to travel out of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.

However, Justice Hamza Muazu of the FCT High Court ruled that Emefiele must remain in the country.

The former CBN governor was restricted to the FCT on his bail terms, but Emefiele, through his lawyer, Mathew Bukka, SAN, requested a variation of the terms.

On December 24, 2023, the court granted former CBN governor Emefiele bail of N300 million with two sureties in a similar sum.
