May 2, 2024 DSTV Tariff Hike: Court Orders Lawyer To Paste Restraining Order At MultiChoice Office

The Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal in Abuja has instructed that its temporary injunction, preventing MultiChoice Nigeria Limited from raising DSTV tariffs, be displayed prominently at the company's corporate headquarters and all known branch addresses nationwide.

Chairman Saratu Shafii, in an order dated April 29, 2024, specified that the directive should also be conveyed via MultiChoice's email, social media platforms, and other public communication channels. This interim measure was granted in response to a complaint by Abuja-based lawyer Festus Onifade, who objected to MultiChoice's announced tariff hike for its DStv and Gotv packages set to take effect from May 1.

Onifade had requested the tribunal to temporarily restrain MultiChoice from implementing the price increase pending further legal proceedings. The tribunal initially halted MultiChoice's tariff adjustments pending the outcome of the legal process. However, when attempts to serve MultiChoice at its Abuja office were allegedly rebuffed by staff, the tribunal issued a substituted service order under relevant legal provisions.

Under this order, the tribunal directed that the original injunction be displayed at MultiChoice's headquarters and all known branch locations nationwide. Additionally, the documents must be transmitted to MultiChoice's official email, social media platforms, and other publicly accessible communication channels, as well as posted at the tribunal's communication outlet.
