April 5, 2024 Court Convicts Bobrisky After Pleading Guilty To Naira Abuse

In a significant legal development, Idris Olanrewaju Okuneye, widely known as Bobrisky, has been convicted by Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Federal High Court in Ikeja after pleading guilty to abuse of the naira.

Prior to the verdict, Bobrisky expressed to the court that he was unaware of the law regarding the abuse of the Nigerian currency. However, Justice Awogboro emphasized that ignorance of the law is not an excuse. Bobrisky acknowledged this, stating, "I know, my lord."

Seeking leniency, Bobrisky appealed to the judge for a second chance to use his influential platform to educate his followers on the proper handling of money, particularly regarding the act of spraying cash. He assured the court of his commitment to rectify his actions, expressing remorse for his behavior.

Following the conviction, Bobrisky faces the prospect of serving six months in prison, paying a fine of N50,000, or both, as stipulated by Section 21 (1) of the CBN Act 2007.

During the proceedings, Bobrisky pleaded guilty to the first four counts related to naira abuse, while the remaining counts pertaining to money laundering were struck out upon the request of the EFCC's counsel, Suleiman Suleiman.

Bobrisky's appearance in court was facilitated by officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), who brought him in a white bus at 9:12 a.m. on Friday morning. His arrest earlier in the week stemmed from allegations of naira abuse and money laundering.
