WA Announces Athlete Of The Year Nominees, Amusan Not Included

Tobi Amusan, the world record holder in the women's 100m hurdles, did not secure a spot on the final shortlist for the Women's World Athlete of The Year Award.

World Athletics recently unveiled its list of 11 nominees, with only three Africans cutting: Tigist Assefa and Gudaf Tsegay from Ethiopia and Kenya's Faith Kipyegon.

Amusan had created history last year when she became the first Nigerian nominated for the Women's World Athlete of The Year but was ultimately bested by 400m hurdles record holder Sydney McLaughlin.

Just last month, Amusan retained her Diamond League title by winning the 100m women's hurdles in a remarkable 12.33 seconds, matching the three consecutive titles record held by Dawn Nelson-Harper. In the previous year, Amusan had a remarkable performance at the World Championships in Eugene, clinching the gold in the 100m hurdles and breaking the world record in the semi-finals with a time of 12.12 seconds. She became the first Nigerian world champion and world record holder in athletics. She also secured gold medals in the 100m hurdles and the 4x100m relays at the Commonwealth Games.

This year's nominees list is headlined by five world record breakers, with Kenya's Faith Kipyegon, the World 1500m and 5000m champion, setting three world records in 2023. Other notable nominees include Tigist Assefa from Ethiopia, who set a world marathon record and won the Berlin Marathon, and Dutchwoman Femke Bol, who established a world indoor record in the 400m flat.

Maria Perez, a record holder in the 35km race walk, and Gudaf Tsegay, who broke Kipyegon's 5000m world record while winning the event at the Diamond League final in Eugene, Oregon, complete the list of world record holders among the nominees.

The nominations also feature Shericka Jackson, the Jamaican world 200m champion and double sprint Diamond League winner; Haruka Kitaguchi from Japan, the world and Diamond League javelin champion; and Yaroslava Mahuchikh, who claimed the high jump title in Budapest and Eugene.

Rounding out the list are world and Diamond League triple champion Yulimar Rojas, Sha'Carri Richardson, the American 100m world champion, and Winfred Yavi from Bahrain, who secured the 3000m steeplechase title in Budapest and Eugene.

Rooney Named New Birmingham Manager

Former Manchester United star Wayne Rooney has assumed the role of manager at Championship club Birmingham. The appointment was officially announced on Wednesday, marking the beginning of a new era for the team.

Rooney has committed to a three-and-a-half-year contract, taking over from John Eustace at St Andrew's. This transition follows his departure from Major League Soccer side DC United just last week.

Despite Eustace's relatively short tenure of 15 months, which saw Birmingham secure a commendable sixth-place position in the Championship this season, he was let go. Rooney is now entrusted with guiding the club towards a promotion push for the Premier League.

Rooney commented on his new role and expressed his excitement and commitment, stating, "I am delighted to join Birmingham City at such an exciting time. It is very clear that they have a plan and are committed to realising their ambition for the club. We are fully aligned on what is expected. I have been building my managerial career and putting myself in challenging environments to get me ready for this opportunity. It's a project that gives me a sense of purpose, and I can't wait to get started."

Rooney's coaching staff at Birmingham includes former England teammate Ashley Cole, England Under-21s assistant coach, and John O'Shea, the assistant coach of the Republic of Ireland. Also joining the team are Carl Robinson and Pete Shuttleworth, who previously collaborated with Rooney at DC United.

Tom Wagner, co-owner of Birmingham, expressed confidence in Rooney's leadership, stating, "Wayne is a born winner. With the support of his coaching staff, the club, and our supporters, we believe he will take Blues forward on the next stage of our journey."

Rooney gained managerial experience in the Championship during his stint with Derby County from November 2020 to June 2022.

The United Kingdom and Ireland to host the 2028 European Championships

The United Kingdom and Ireland will host Euro 2028, while Turkey and Italy will host in 2032.

The UEFA executive committee approved the five-nation offer, which went unopposed after Turkey withdrew last week to focus on its joint bid for Euro 2032 with Italy.

The UK-Ireland proposal submission in April featured ten stadiums. Six of the locations are in England, with one from Northern Ireland, one from the Republic of Ireland, one from Scotland, and one from Wales.

The event will take place in June and July of 2028, exactly seven years after England and Scotland hosted games during the re-arranged competition, which took place across Europe.

UEFA expects Euro 2028 to generate more revenue than any other big tournament, including Euro 2032.
