Liverpool Face Arsenal In FA Cup Clash Without Mo Salah

With Mohamed Salah out, Jurgen Klopp says it is “impossible” for Liverpool to play in the same manner without the Egyptian.

The forward, who scored twice against Newcastle on New Year’s Day, will represent his country in the Africa Cup of Nations, but the Reds will be without their most prolific goalscorer and key attacking danger.

Salah has been a fixture in Liverpool’s front three since his arrival in 2017, and his impact on games makes him difficult to replace. So much so that, despite the abundance of attacking quality at his disposal, Klopp admits that whoever replaces Salah on the right, likely Harvey Elliott, will not be able to recreate the Egyptian.

“I think we played against West Ham with Harvey there, and we have different defensive options,” he explained. Other players can play on the wing, but not as effectively as Mo. That is the premise behind it: we employ the boys and their skills. Do we want to play with or without Mo? No.

“However, we will find a way.” Of course, we play Arsenal, and we can lose with Mo Salah – but right now, we have a chance to win, so we consider that.”

An FA Cup match against Arsenal will be Liverpool’s first without Salah, who has previously been absent due to AFCON.

The games are coming thick and fast for Klopp, who wants to keep the Merseysiders fighting on four fronts with a Carabao Cup semi-final on the horizon.

Liverpool’s attacking options include Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo, and Diogo Jota, although each of the aforementioned quartet has shown to be as potent in front of goal.

Salah, on the other hand, was sure that his club would do well in his absence: “We believe too much, we have such good talents, they just need to work hard, nothing else.” We need to express ourselves, play football, and if they succeed, Working hard, as I see it at the gym, after training, and during games, is what keeps us winning.”

January 2, 2024 Birmingham Sack Wayne Rooney

Birmingham Sack Wayne Rooney

Birmingham City has decided to part ways with head coach Wayne Rooney following a disappointing performance in the Championship.

The decision comes after a string of unsatisfactory results during Rooney's tenure, where the team managed to secure only two victories out of 15 matches, resulting in a drop from sixth to 20th position in the league standings.  An official announcement about his departure is anticipated shortly.

Rooney assumed the coaching role when Birmingham City was in a promising position for promotion. However, subpar performances, including nine league defeats, have left the team perilously close to the relegation zone, holding just two spots above it.

The decision to terminate Rooney's contract follows the dismissal of his predecessor, John Eustace, despite a strong start to the season. The new ownership is determined to instill a more competitive mindset and an ambitious culture within the club.

Rooney faced managerial challenges before, as seen in his unsuccessful stint with Derby County, where he couldn't prevent the team's relegation to League One amidst financial and administrative difficulties. Similarly, his coaching tenure at D.C. United in the MLS came to an end after the team failed to qualify for the playoffs. The recent decision by Birmingham City reflects the club's commitment to making strategic changes in pursuit of improved performance and success on the field.

Ajegunle To Host Ogedegbe U-12 Football Tourney

Ajegunle, a vibrant neighbourhood in Lagos, is set to host the Ogedegbe U-12 football tournament on January 6th, 7th, 13th, and 14th at the Navy Barracks, thanks to the sponsorship of ex-international footballer Nathaniel Ogedegbe.

With a rich background as a footballer and youth coach, Ogedegbe is eager to contribute to identifying and nurturing young talents in Ajegunle. Notably, the neighborhood has been a fertile ground for football stars like Emmanuel Amuneke, Odion Ighalo, and Ifeanyi Udeze, discovered through talent scouting initiatives.

Expressing his vision for the tournament, Ogedegbe emphasised its potential to address youth restiveness and provide a positive engagement platform for the young residents. He stated, "I believe the tournament will help address youth restiveness and positively engage them. The event is a platform to hone their skills, expose themselves, and improve."

Nathaniel Ogedegbe, a former Flying Eagles star, has a storied history in Nigerian football. He attended and played for St Finbarr’s College, Yaba, Lagos, where he served as the captain of the school football team. His journey continued with selections for the first U-20 national team and then the Green Eagles, alongside legends like the late Stephen Keshi and Henry Nwosu.

In 1981, Ogedegbe ventured to the United States to join the men’s soccer program. At Alabama A&M University, he earned numerous personal recognitions, culminating in his induction into the Alabama Hall of Fame in 2013.

Presently, Ogedegbe serves as the Director of Flawless Soccer in the US, balancing his commitment to football with his profession as a civil engineer. The Ogedegbe U-12 football tournament is a testament to his dedication to nurturing the next generation of football talents and providing them with valuable opportunities for growth and exposure.

West Ham Were Better Than Us, Says Arsenal’s Arteta

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has praised West Ham’s resilient play to give the Gunners their first home defeat of the season.

Thursday night’s match would have seen Arsenal leapfrog Liverpool and sit at the top of the EPL log if they had beaten West Ham; however, despite racking up 30 shots over the 90 minutes, they were left frustrated.

“I congratulate West Ham and praise my players, that’s what I can say. This is football. You look at what we’ve done in the game and how much we generated, and to see the result is very disappointing, but they were better than us in both boxes. They had two shots, with the penalty, three, we had thirty.

“I don’t know how many touches in the box, how many situations, how many open goals to score and we haven’t. In football, you have to do that better if you want to win, and today, we haven’t won because of that. The team kept trying for the rest and had an incredible attitude again,” he said in a post-match interview.

On his side’s missed chances, the Spaniard expressed his disbelief at Arsenal’s dominance in the game but credited David Moyes’ team structure.

“I cannot imagine a game in which you have more dominance, more touches in the box, fewer situations of the opponents against a really good West Ham side, but today wasn’t enough to win the game.”

The Arsenal boss further criticised the VAR decision as not being decisive enough to ascertain if Jarrod Bowen’s cross to Thomas Soucek should have stood.

“I haven’t seen it; the only thing they are saying is that it’s not conclusive the images that they have; it’s just a shame that with our technology, it’s not that clear that we can say yes that it was out or in. It’s done, gone, nothing we can do about it now.”

“I don’t know, but the technology we have at the moment is not good enough to give us that answer. So, what we have to do is, without that, win the game. With the number of situations, we generate in the game, it should have been more than enough.”

Arteta quickly rebuffed claims of his men lacking confidence, saying, “I don’t think it’s that. You hit the post, or you hit the ball, and it's half a centimetre, and you have, I don’t know how many shots, or someone blocks the shot, and it doesn’t come in. We miss a lot of situations when we have to pick the right pass. There are two players free in the box, and I can recall five or six actions of that, and that’s what makes the difference in winning the games.”
