Supreme Court Affirms Umo Eno As Akwa Ibom Governor

The Supreme Court has upheld the election victory of Umo Eno from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as the duly elected governor of Akwa Ibom State. The court dismissed the appeals by three parties challenging the outcome of the March 18, 2023, election.

The apex court panel, led by Justice Uwani Abba-Aji, rejected the appeals filed by the All-Progressives Congress (APC), the Young Progressives Party (YPP), and the Action Alliance (AC). The dismissal was based on the grounds of the non-qualification of the governor, who faced allegations of certificate forgery—allegations vehemently denied by the governor.

The Court of Appeal had previously affirmed the judgment dismissing a suit challenging the primary that selected Umo Eno as the PDP candidate for the state. The appellant, Okon, had sought the disqualification of Eno, claiming that he had forged a West African Examination Certificate (WAEC), which he submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the election.

The appellate court, however, dismissed the suit, deeming it lacking in merit, and imposed a fine of 15 million naira against the plaintiff. The judge determined that Okon's arguments were speculative and failed to substantiate the claim that Eno's certificates were forged. As a result, the Supreme Court, in its recent decision, affirmed Eno's election victory, ending the legal challenges the opposing parties posed.

During a court appearance before Judge Donatus Okorowo at the Federal High Court in Abuja, Agunloye pleaded not guilty to the charges levelled against him.

In September, reports suggested that the EFCC had traced questionable payments from Sunrise Power and Transmission Ltd to Agunloye's bank accounts. Additionally, former President Olusegun Obasanjo had challenged Agunloye to disclose the authority under which he awarded a $6 billion contract to Sunrise for the Mambilla hydropower project in 2003.

Agunloye defended his actions by asserting that the government was not obligated to make any payments to Sunrise under the build, operate, and transfer (BOT) agreement. According to him, the project was intended to be fully financed by the newly established company, and he highlighted that the company's declared assets at the time were valued at less than $2,000.

Betta Edu: Perm Sec Takes Over Ministry Of Humanitarian Affairs And Poverty Alleviation

Abel Olumuyiwa Enitan, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, has assumed control of the ministry in the wake of the suspension of Minister Betta Edu.

This action aligns with President Bola Tinubu's directive, which suspended Edu on Monday due to allegations of her involvement in an N585 million fraud.

The accusations against the minister involve the alleged transfer of public funds into private accounts. Enitan officially took on the responsibilities of the ministry after receiving a letter from the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation on Monday night.

Tinubu, through his Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, had instructed the suspended minister to "hand over to the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation." Furthermore, President Tinubu directed Edu to fully cooperate with investigating authorities during their inquiry.

In addition, a panel headed by the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance has been tasked by the President to conduct a thorough examination of the financial architecture and framework of the social investment programmes. The goal is to reform relevant institutions and programs comprehensively, addressing any institutional weaknesses for the exclusive benefit of disadvantaged households and restoring lost public confidence in the initiative.
