Federal Government and NARTO Meeting at Standstill as Tanker Drivers Commence Strike

On Monday, the much-anticipated meeting between the Federal Government, the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), and other stakeholders concluded without a consensus.

Prompted by the suspension of operations by tanker drivers, who ceased lifting petroleum products on Monday due to the harsh economic conditions, the government called for the meeting.

However, Minister of State for Petroleum, Heineken Lokpobiri, affirmed that discussions would resume on Tuesday, emphasizing the government's commitment to promptly addressing the nation's economic challenges.

Assurances were given regarding the proactive efforts of the administration led by Tinubu to tackle the current economic crisis effectively.

Reports suggest that NARTO leadership and other oil and gas sector stakeholders are scheduled to convene with National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu later on Monday night to preempt the looming fuel scarcity.

The threat of a nationwide shutdown by NARTO members stemmed from the soaring cost of automotive gas oil (diesel), which is crucial for powering the trucks transporting petroleum products across Nigeria.

With diesel prices surpassing N1,250 per litre, akin to the exorbitant costs of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol), which now exceeds N600 per litre, the escalation is primarily attributed to the prevailing forex crisis in the country.

Court Strikes Out Treasonable Felony Charge Against Sowore

On Monday, Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja made a significant ruling by striking out charges of treasonable felony against Omoyele Sowore, the convener of the #RevolutionNow protest brought by the Federal Government.

The decision followed the Federal Government's submission, made through the Attorney General's office last week, to discontinue the case. The notice cited legal provisions empowering the Attorney General to take such action.

During the ruling, Justice Nwite emphasized the necessity of striking out the charges since the case was essentially commencing anew under his jurisdiction. Consequently, he formally dismissed the charges against Sowore.

Additionally, the court directed the Department of State Services (DSS) to return three phones, Sowore's passport, and the sum of N10,000 that had been seized from him, along with a phone belonging to the second defendant.

This development stems from Sowore and his co-defendant Olawale Bakare's arraignment in 2019 following a protest rally in Abuja under the banner of "Revolution Now."

Economic Hardship: Tinubu Won’t Resign, Says Information Minister

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has said President Bola Tinubu will not resign as he is taking steps to bring relief to Nigerians amidst the current economic hardship.

In a statement released by his Special Assistant on Media, Rabiu Ibrahim, Idris was reacting to the call by the People’s Democratic Party governors for President Tinubu to resign if he cannot solve Nigeria’s economic problems.

The statement said the PDP and its governors should not be seeking, through the back door of intimidation, what they have consistently failed to achieve by democratic means since 2015.

It said those who could not bring about transformational change when they had a lengthy chance should not seek to interrupt or distract those busy at work on the presidential vision that Nigerians elected them to implement.

The statement further noted that Nigerians have not forgotten that the APC administration cleared several liabilities left behind by the PDP government, such as subsidy claims by oil marketers, Paris Club refunds, and so on.

It added that President Tinubu is not and will never be overwhelmed by the current challenges the country is facing. He will not abdicate his responsibilities but will courageously continue to wrestle with the challenges and surmount them, laying a durable foundation for the emerging Nigeria.

Emefiele Left Economy In Mess, We Don’t Know What To Charge Him With – Akpabio

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has said President Bola Tinubu’s administration inherited an entangled economy from former Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele.

He noted that the situation is so dire that the federal government is unsure what charges to bring against him.

Speaking at Senator Barinada Mpigi’s Thanksgiving service in Koroma, Tai Local Government Area, Rivers State, Akpabio insisted that the current economic woes and hunger were due to past policies.

The senate president, however, assured Nigerians of efforts to improve security and living standards while calling for patience on the part of the citizens.

The FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, also at the event, called for patience just as he boasted about the chances of the current administration coming in 2027.
