APC Suspends Kogi Governorship Campaign

In a sad turn of events, the All-Progressives Congress (APC) has temporarily halted its campaign efforts for the upcoming Nov. 11 Kogi Governorship Election.

This decision is a solemn tribute to Ms. Khadijat Yahaya, a dedicated party member who tragically lost her life in an attack by suspected thugs.

Kingsley Fanwo, the spokesperson for the state Campaign Council, conveyed this heartfelt message in an official statement released from Lokoja. The incident that led to Khadijat's untimely demise occurred during a clash between supporters of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and those of the APC in Kotonkarfe on Sept. 29.

Alhaji Usman Ododo, the state APC governorship candidate, visited the bereaved family in Kotonkarfe on Tuesday to extend his deepest sympathies. Overwhelmed by the loss, Ododo offered prayers for the peaceful repose of Khadijat's soul.

Malam Saliu Akawu, in response, expressed gratitude for Ododo's compassionate gesture. He emphasised that Ododo's visit exemplified his leadership as one driven by empathy and a strong connection to his people. Akawu lamented that senseless violence had taken Khadijat, a beacon of peace, from them.

Alhaji Usman Ododo also paid respects at the Palace of the Ohimege of Kotonkarfe, Alhaji Abdulrazak Koto. He shared his deep sorrow over Khadijat's tragic passing and described her as a fervent advocate for peace and progress in Kotonkarfe. Ododo pledged to pursue justice for Khadijat's grieving family, promising to honour her memory through meaningful action.

This pause in campaign activities serves as a poignant reminder of the very real impact that violence can have on the lives of individuals dedicated to the democratic process. The APC community stands united in honouring Khadijat's memory and in their commitment to ensuring a safer, more just society for all.

This followed the death of two persons, including a pregnant woman, two children and a tricycle driver, after a scuffle involving officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, a policeman and a driver in the Ago Palace area of the state.

Eyewitnesses alleged that one of the LASTMA officials at Okota Roundabout was trying to take over a vehicle's steering from the driver while in motion.

It was alleged that the driver had violated traffic rules, and while they were chasing after him, the vehicle lost control and rammed into a tricycle on Bayo Oyewale Street.

The incident sparked a protest as an angry mob descended on the LASTMA official.

LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq said the tricycle operator died instantly; the pregnant woman later died at the hospital while two injured school children are in the Intensive Care Unit receiving medical attention.
