Fire Guts Popular Mandilas Building On Lagos Island

Margaret Adeyeye, the Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, attributed the destructive fire that engulfed the well-known Mandalas Building on Lagos Island to a spark originating from welding activities. The 10-storey structure on Broad Street in the Lagos Island Local Government Area fell victim to the flames yesterday.

Adeyeye, in an earlier statement, revealed that emergency responders from the Ebute Elefun and Sari Iganmu Fire Stations were swiftly dispatched to the location. Addressing journalists at the scene, she provided insights into how the fire was initiated.

During the coverage of the incident, another government official named Gbenga Oyerinde expressed concern over the alteration of the original layout of the area. Lamenting the changes, Oyerinde shared his views at the site of the fire.

Lagos Seals Two Markets For Poor Waste Disposal

The Lagos State Government has sealed Oke-Afa Market in Isolo and Katangowa Market in Abule Egba for violating waste disposal regulations and other unhygienic practices around the markets.

This was made known in a statement by Folashade Kadiri, Director of Public Affairs of the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAMWA).

According to the statement, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, noted that the government's zero tolerance for waste initiative started last year is still on, stressing that any market or facility engaging in reckless waste disposal would be sanctioned.

He stressed that the only way for markets and traders to escape sanctions from the state government is to engage in decent and civilised waste disposal practices as outlined by the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA).

Wahab said the markets would remain sealed until stringent hygiene and waste disposal measures are implemented and compliance maintained.

The Managing Director and CEO of LAWMA, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, urged various market executives to always mobilise their members to abide by waste management regulations.

Makinde Provides Ibadan Explosion Update: 90% Of Victims Released, 5 Fatalities Reported

Providing an update on the tragic incident that unfolded in Ibadan on Tuesday, January 16, 2023, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State shared encouraging news during a recent briefing. He revealed that over 90% of the victims of the explosion have now been discharged from various hospitals.

Commending the state's security agencies for their efforts in maintaining order in the Bodija area, Governor Makinde expressed his gratitude to the residents for cooperating with security directives. During the Sunday briefing on January 21, he acknowledged, "I commend our security agencies in Oyo State who have been maintaining law and order in and around Bodija this week, as well as residents who have been complying with directives from these officers."

Accompanied by the Honourable Commissioner for Health, the governor provided further details on the medical situation. He mentioned that the Emergency Operations Center's medical team visited two hospitals where victims were treated, reporting that over 90% have been discharged.

Governor Makinde also shared the unfortunate news that the death toll from the incident stands at five. To support the emotional well-being of the victims, he disclosed that a clinical psychologist had initiated counselling services at the Emergency Operations Centre in Ibadan.

Transitioning to the recovery phase, the governor announced the conclusion of search and rescue operations at the Dejo Oyelese Close site of the explosion, stating, "The operations at Ground Zero have moved from search and rescue to recovery."

Expressing appreciation for collaborating with the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Governor Makinde acknowledged their efforts in conducting structural integrity tests on approximately 230 properties surrounding the blast site. This included 13 houses within a 50-meter radius, 40 houses within a 100-meter radius, 122 houses within a 200-meter radius, and 53 houses within a 250-meter radius.

Recognizing the collaborative support, Governor Makinde thanked Governor Jide Sanwo-Olu for releasing the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) to assist Oyo State in the explosion's aftermath. He also expressed gratitude to the team led by Engineer Olatunde Akinsanya, the Director of Operations, for their invaluable assistance.

In a disturbing incident on Thursday night, kidnappers targeted the Nigerian Army Post Housing Scheme in the Kurudu area of Abuja, seizing two residents, including the wife and an in-law of lawyer Cyril Adikwu. The abduction unfolded around 10:00 p.m. in the Phase 2 region of the estate, marked by a spree of gunshots from the invaders.

Austine John, a neighbour of the victims, shared the harrowing experience with journalists, describing how the kidnappers entered the estate, firing shots indiscriminately and successfully abducting two individuals while Adikwu managed to escape. The event, characterised by fear and trauma, prompted immediate action from the estate's management, and army personnel arrived subsequently to bolster security measures.

The incident occurred shortly after the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, asserted that the federal government would not tolerate any form of bandit attack in Abuja. John expressed the anxiety among residents throughout the night and urged President Tinubu to intervene and put an end to the brutal acts perpetrated by kidnappers.

John recounted the unsettling sequence of events, stating, "It all started at about 10:00. We suddenly started hearing gunshots, and immediately we knew something was wrong." He praised the swift response of the estate's management and the arrival of army personnel, but lamented the tragic outcome.

As of the press, the Federal Capital Territory Police Command had not issued an official statement. Kidnappings have escalated in the Federal Capital Territory recently, with numerous residents falling victim almost daily. The alarming trend has provoked a public outcry, with Nigerians urging concerned stakeholders to take decisive action to end this menace.
