Why We Demolished Assembly Complex- Rivers Govt

The Rivers State Government has attributed the House of Assembly complex demolition to structural defects arising from the explosion and fire outbreak in October.

The state commissioner for information, Joseph Johnson, said that the incident rendered the building unfit for human use, saying that there were visible cracks on the walls and the entire structure looked frail and unsafe for legislative business.

He said that professional advice was sought on the integrity of the building after Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s inspection visit to determine the level of damage, and demolition was recommended.

Johnson, however, said the Rivers state government has provided an alternative venue for the House of Assembly to conduct its affairs pending the rebuilding of the complex.

Speaking later on about the demolition, the state commissioner for information, Joseph Johnson, said dynamites had been reportedly used to attack the complex, leading to visible cracks on the walls, hence the grave damage.

Gunmen Kill Four Soldiers, Kidnap Two Expatriates In Rivers

Gunmen have shot four soldiers and two drivers dead as they ambushed a convoy of Daewoo workers along the Ahoada/Abua East-West axis in Rivers State.

The gunmen also reportedly kidnapped two expatriates of the company.

It was gathered that the victims were on their way to Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, when they were ambushed.

A source said the miscreants trailed the expatriate workers who were being escorted by soldiers along the Ahoada-Obua Road and opened fire on them.

Meanwhile, a community source claimed that the attack may be a reprisal following a recent military operation that took place in the area where arms and ammunition were seized.

The Nigerian Army, 6th Division, confirmed the attack and the killing of the soldiers.

In a statement, the acting Deputy Director 6, Division Army Public Relations, Major Jonah Danjuma said the troops were men of the 5th Battalion.
