Tinubu Seeks Senate’s Nod For $8.7bn, €100m Loans

President Bola Tinubu has urged the Senate to deliberate and grant approval for a request to secure a loan amounting to 8.69 billion dollars and 100 million euros.

This forms part of the 2022–2024 external borrowing plan envisioned by the federal government.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio read the president’s letter of request during plenary.

The president highlighted that the World Bank and the African Development Bank (AfDB) have expressed willingness to contribute 1 billion dollars and 1.5 billion naira to support the loan.

He noted that the projects cut across all sectors, specifically emphasising infrastructure, agriculture, health, security, employment generation, and financial management reforms. 

Akpabio, after that, referred the executive request to the Senate Committee on Foreign and Local Debts for further legislative work and to report at plenary in one week.

The president’s letter was also sent to the House of Representatives and read by the Speaker, Tajudeen Abass.

11 Dead, 54 Others Injured In Kebbi Auto Crash

Eleven people have died in a fatal motor vehicle accident along the Maiyama/Koko Road in Kebbi State.

According to Kebbi State police spokesman Nafiu Abubakar, the accident involved a DAF trailer with registration number SKK837X driven by a yet-to-be-identified driver travelling from Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto to Niger State.

The vehicle was carrying 65 passengers—all males—from Sokoto State, bags of onions and beans, and six motorcycles.

Giving a breakdown of the incident, Abubakar said that on reaching a point near Dada village, Koko/Besse LGA, the driver lost control of the vehicle as the truck head suddenly broke off from the body.

He said consequently, the truck swerved into the bush, and upon evacuation to General Hospital Koko, 11 were confirmed dead, while the injured received treatment.

Regarding the incident, Commissioner of Police, Kebbi State Command, Chris Aimionowane, warned all drivers plying along the highways to avoid overloading and overspeeding to prevent future reoccurrences.

Court Adjourns Emefiele’s Case Till January 18

The Federal Capital Territory High Court has adjourned till January 18, 2024, to continue the trial in the alleged procurement fraud suit against former Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele.

Emefiele is accused of using his position to confer a corrupt advantage on a CBN staff member, Sa’adatu Yaro, by awarding a contract to procure 43 vehicles worth N1.2 billion between 2018 and 2020.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges and was remanded at the Kuje Correctional Center pending a ruling on his bail application last Wednesday.

Justice Hamza Muazu, however, granted Emefiele bail in the sum of N300 million. But he is yet to meet his bail conditions, as he was brought to court and taken away by armed personnel of the Nigerian Correctional Service.

At the resumed hearing, the prosecution witness, who is a top official of the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), told the court that Emefiele was not the owner or a shareholder of April 1616 Investment Limited, awarded a N1.2bn vehicle supply contract by CBN under his leadership.

Automation Of Passport Application Takes Off In One Week

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has promised that automation of the passport application process will begin within the next week.

In an earlier interview, the minister had given the assurance; however, speaking more recently, he said the technology was “99 percent done."

According to him, passport automation will go live next week. He asserted that all required in an immigration or passport centre will be biometrics.

Tunji Ojo noted that the ministry aims to provide security and comfort, adding that by February 2024, all Nigerian international airports would have e-gates.
