NMA Threatens Strike, Gives January 31 Deadline

The Nigerian Medical Association has given the Federal Government till January 31, 2024, to meet its demands or risk industrial action in the health sector.

The NMA President, Uche Ojinmah, issued the request at a press briefing after the association’s National Executive Council meeting in Abuja.

The NMA also asked the government to implement the upward review of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure.

Ojinmah stated that the association cannot guarantee industrial harmony after the request if the government fails to meet its demands.

Harrysong Ask Nigerians To Help Plead With KCEE To Release His Royalties

Renowned singer-songwriter Harrysong, a prominent figure in the Nigerian music industry, has garnered widespread acclaim for his hit records and exceptional songwriting skills, earning numerous accolades over the years.

In a recent development concerning his ongoing dispute with former label boss KCEE, Harrysong has turned to his social media platforms to seek the support of Nigerians in his quest to reclaim his rightful royalties. Taking to his Instagram story, Harrysong revealed that KCEE, the head of his former label, Five Star Records, has retained 100% of the royalties from some of his most significant releases under the label.

The affected records, including 'Reggae Blues,' 'Baba For The Girls,' 'Samankwe,' 'Better Pikin,' and 'Ofeshe,' have allegedly been subject to KCEE's exclusive collection of all associated royalties. In a plea to his audience, Harrysong implored everyone to assist him in persuading Kingsley Okonkwo, popularly known as KCEE, to refund his money and release his songs.

Expressing his frustration on his Instagram story, Harrysong stated, "At least he can take his percentage and give me what is rightfully mine." This marks the latest development in an ongoing dispute with his former label associates.

In an X (formerly Twitter) post featuring a screenshot of his Instagram story, Harrysong emphasized his right to what is rightfully his, urging Nigerians to join him in appealing to KCEE for resolution.

The Nigerian music industry has witnessed a surge in disputes between artists and labels concerning the nonpayment of royalties. Notably, Dami Krane recently accused Davido of withholding royalties for a collaborative song, a claim denied by both Davido and producer Shizzi, as the song was revealed to be Dami Krane's creation.

Similarly, following his departure from Marlian Records, the late Street Hop star Mohbad disclosed that he had not received any royalties for his records released under the label, underscoring the prevalent challenges artists face in securing their rightful earnings.

Why National Assembly Can’t Act Yet On Rivers Crisis

The House of Representatives has said it cannot act yet on the political crisis rocking Rivers State because the issue has not been presented formally before the National Assembly.

The deputy spokesman of the House of Representatives, Phillip Agbese, stated this in an interview while reacting to the constitutional power given to the national assembly to take over a state House of Assembly in crisis.

This is as two members of the House of Representatives representing Rivers State, Awaji-Inombek Abiante and Boma Goodhead, led a solidarity march to the Rivers State Government House in support of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The crisis between Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, has led to the resignation of some commissioners, while 27 lawmakers loyal to Wike defected from the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, to the All-Progressives Congress, APC.

Commissioners and other members of Fubara’s cabinet have also been resigning.

But in an interview, Abiante said there is no need for a takeover because the House of Assembly is functioning.

The factional Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Edison Ehie, has written to formally notify the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of the existence of 25 vacant seats and ask the electoral body to commence the conduct of a fresh election.

The speaker, loyal to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, signed the letter, requesting INEC to conduct fresh elections to fill the vacant seats.

The letter surfaced on the same day that the Martin Amaewhule-led lawmakers loyal to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, were officially received by the State’s All Progressives Congress APC Caretaker Committee Chairman, Tony Okocha and representatives of the National Executive Council of the party in Port Harcourt.

Twenty-seven lawmakers led by Amaewhule had defected from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All-Progressives Congress (APC).
