December 3, 2020 Boko Haram insurgency: Retired generals, NEF, others warn against hiring mercenaries

The calls by Borno state Governor, BABAGANA ZULUM and some Senators on the federal government to hire mercenaries to clear the remnant of Boko Haram insurgents in the North-East have been attracting reactions.

This is because some retired generals and socio-political groups have faulted the call saying the country is capable of defending itself.

The recent brutal killings of 43 rice farmers at Kwashebe village in Borno State necessitate the call.

A former Chief of Defence Staff, JOSHUA DOGONYARO and a former General Officer Commanding, 1 Division, Major General ABIODUN ROLE in an interview said what the military needed was ammunitions to execute the war.

According to them, the military also required support of the citizens including the media, to help in the asymmetrical war.

Also, socio-political groups, including the Northern Elders’ Forum, and the Coalition of Northern Groups, have also kicked against faulted move.
