NiMET Set to Commence Strike on Monday Over Unsettled Arrears

Aviation unions, including the National Union of Air Transport Employees Association of Nigeria, the Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals, and the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations and Technical and Recreational Employees, have directed staff members of the Nigeria Meteorology Agency to commence strike action on Monday, May 20, 2024.

This directive was outlined in a letter dated May 14, 2024, obtained by our correspondent on Wednesday. The strike action is a result of the management's failure to address 45 months of minimum wage arrears and consequential adjustments for staff members. The union, represented by the three General Secretaries: Ocheme Aba, Abdulrasaq Seidu, and Waheed Sikiru, addressed a letter to NiMET’s Director General, Prof Charles Anoske, with the subject line ‘Re: Failure to Pay 45-Month Arrears of Minimum Wage Consequential Adjustment—14 days ultimatum.’

Despite the issuance of an ultimatum, management responded with a proposal to pay off the 45 months of arrears in installments. They also expressed disappointment that the agency’s staff has yet to receive palliative payments sanctioned by the Federal Government since October 2023. Additionally, they highlighted that the 25-35 percent salary increase has not been implemented for them, and NiMET has been excluded from receiving Peculiar Allowances. “Furthermore, our Unions through a joint letter dated April 4, 2024, did request a review of the outdated conditions of service. To date, the management has not responded to our union's request,” it read.

The letter further states, “The above catalog of woes, and others unmentioned confirm that NiMET Staff have been subjected to abject poverty – worse than any existing aviation establishment. In our considered view, it is inhuman on the part of management to allow these conditions, and irresponsible on the part of unions to tolerate this situation for this long.

“Therefore, this letter serves as notice to the management of NiMET that the staff members of the agency are, by a copy of this letter, directed to withdraw all services with effect from Monday, May 20, 2024, unless and until the outstanding 42 months arrears of consequential adjustment are fully paid off. “NiMET Salary structure is adapted to an appropriate Federal Government approved structure and all accruable payments liquidated, Management commences review of the outdated CoS with our Unions with a definite timeline for delivery and actualization.”

Drama As Portable Jumps Gate To Avoid Arrest

Nigerian musician, Habeeb Okikiola, better known as Portable, made headlines on Tuesday as he attempted to evade arrest by jumping over a gate to escape operatives of the Lagos State Police Command. His arrest came in response to a complaint filed by a car dealer to whom he owed money.

Portable had initiated the purchase of an N27 million G-Wagon from the dealer, making an initial payment and promising to settle the remaining amount later. However, when confronted by police officers, he attempted to flee the scene. In a video circulating on social media, Portable, dressed in a white and black striped shirt, can be seen engaging in a conversation with the officers before suddenly leaping over a nearby gate and making a run for it. He was later apprehended by four police operatives and taken into custody.

Confirming the arrest, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, explained that Portable had purchased the G-Wagon for N27 million, paid N13 million, and refused to pay the remaining balance, claiming the vehicle was faulty.

This isn't the first time Portable has found himself in trouble with the law. In 2023, he was arrested and arraigned over allegations of assault on a former signee. Despite police requests for him to surrender, Portable evaded arrest until he was eventually picked up at his residence in Ota.

Portable, known for his controversial nature, rose to fame with his hit single "Zazuu," featuring rapper Olamide, in 2021.

Aston Villa Clinch Champions League Qualification For The First Time In 41 Years

Following Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-0 defeat to Manchester City, Aston Villa have qualified for the Champions League next season.

Aston Villa now leads fifth-place Tottenham by five points with one game remaining.

It means the team will compete in the Champions League for the first time since 1982-83. Villa last qualified for the competition, which was then known as the European Cup, by winning it in 1982, defeating Bayern Munich in the final.

Villa assured Spurs would need to defeat City on Tuesday to keep the chase for the final Champions League spot alive heading into the season’s final game, after coming from behind 3-1 to draw 3-3 with Liverpool on Monday evening.

Jhon Duran scored in the 85th and 88th minutes to save a point for Unai Emery’s team, leaving Spurs needing maximum points against title contenders City.

Erling Haaland’s two second-half goals secured a 2-0 win for City, keeping their title hopes alive and denying Spurs Champions League football.

Emery became Villa’s head coach in October 2022, replacing Steven Gerrard who had left Villarreal.

Villa were 16th in the Premier League, two places and one point above the relegation zone when Emery took charge. Under the Spanish head coach’s guidance the club ended the season in seventh and secured qualification for the Europa Conference League, ensuring they would play European football for the first time in 13 years.

In his first full season in charge, Emery has led Villa to the Champions League for the first time in 41 years.

Man City Defeat Tottenham 2-0 To Move Within Touching Distance Of The Premier League Title

Manchester City defeated Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday night to move one win away from a fourth consecutive Premier League title.

City had a lot of chances in the first half, forcing a couple of good saves from Guglielmo Vicario, but the game was tied as both teams went into halftime.

But the game, and the title race, were essentially characterized by two events. First, Erling Haaland scored following a great assist from Kevin De Bruyne. Stefan Ortega made a late save on Son Heung-min, which was followed by City’s late penalty by Haaland.

This season, City has battled against the ‘Big Six’, beating Manchester United twice but failing to do as well in the other games. As a result, they haven’t had a standout moment that will define their season.

They have been relentless against the rest — they have not lost in five months — and have done so mercilessly, but this has sparked criticism that it is boring. The complete debate is for another day, and, as I already stated, there was no drama here that helped Arsenal’s title aspirations, but it was a night of high drama nonetheless.

While City still need to beat West Ham on Sunday to complete the job, they have made a significant stride toward winning the title for the fourth time in a row and making history in the process.
