National Assembly postpones resumption to Oct 9

The National Assembly has shifted its resumption from its annual recess from September 25 to October 9.

Clerk of the National Assembly, MOHAMMED OMOLORI announced this yesterday, attributing the shift to the ongoing primary elections being conducted by some political parties.

The National Assembly began its annual vacation on July 24.

In Lagos, residents of Old Ota Road, in the AgbadoOkeOdo Local Council Development Area of the State have embarked on a peaceful protest against the return of refuse trucks to the road.

The residents, including schoolchildren, displayed placards with different inscriptions to express anger over the pollution caused by the trucks owned by the Lagos State Waste Management Authority and operators of the Private Sector Participants (PSP).

The protesters said the trucks surfaced on the road about a month ago, adding that those who operated food business were shutting down operation because of the pollution caused by the trucks.

However, the General Manager of LAWMA, Mr. SEGUN ADENIJI, said government was taking measures to handle the environmental issues arising from the parking of truck in the area.

The Nelson Mandela Peace Summit is one of the side-events of the UN General Assembly Summit.

President BUHARI described the anti-apartheid icon as a man whose lifetime symbolised uncommon humility, compassion, courage and forgiveness.

The President also stated that the world recognizes the contribution of women to advancement of society and their contribution to the prevention and resolution of conflicts.

PDP National Convention: Party leaders disagree over venue

Meanwhile, the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP is yet to agree on a venue for its party’s presidential primaries scheduled for October 6.

The party’s Board of Trustees and the National Working Committee NWC’s different positions became evident at the inauguration of the party’s National Convention Planning Committee on Monday in Abuja.

This followed a sharp disagreement between the chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT), Senator WALID JIBRIN, and the NWC.

Inaugurating the committee, PDP Deputy National Chairman, South Elder, YEMI AKINWONMI, said that the party leaders had consulted widely on the venue and agreed for Port Harcourt, Rivers.

However, JIBRIN, in his remarks said that the party had yet to make final decision on the choice of venue for the convention.
