March 25, 2024 Binance Executive Escapes Custody While Detained

One of the detained Binance executives in Nigeria, Nadeem Anjarwalla, reportedly escapes from custody.

In February, amid government efforts to curb speculation on the naira by tightening regulations on cryptocurrency exchanges, the Federal Government detained two senior Binance executives on charges including tax evasion.

Anjarwalla's reported escape occurred on Friday from the Abuja guest house where he and his colleague were held, as detailed by Premium Times. Allegedly, he absconded after being escorted by guards to a nearby mosque for prayers.

Despite Anjarwalla's British passport being held by Nigerian authorities upon entry, he is believed to have departed Abuja via a Middle Eastern airline. Authorities are investigating his intended destination to facilitate his return to custody.

An immigration official disclosed that Anjarwalla fled Nigeria using a Kenyan passport, raising questions about how he obtained it in addition to his British citizenship.

While detained, Anjarwalla and his colleague enjoyed privileges such as telephone access, according to reports. It is suspected that he exploited these privileges to plan his escape.

Efforts to confirm the incident with Zakari Mijinyawa, Head of Strategic Communication at the Office of the National Security Adviser, yielded no response at the time of reporting. Mijinyawa promised to investigate further but has yet to provide an update.
