NFF Suspends 14 Referees Over Poor Officiating

Fourteen referees have been suspended by the Nigeria Football Federation in the Nigeria Premier Football League campaign over poor officiating.

This was confirmed in a communiqué from the federation's Referees Development Committee on Monday to the NPFL chief operating officer, Davison Owumi, according to Ahmad Tijani on Inspiration FM.

The referees suspended are Saeed Abdulaziz, Jimmy Aimugbonrie, Brown Ebenezer and Atuwho Morrison, Bawa Buhari, Chukwuka Jahlove, and Akinwale Tomiwa.

Others include Saeed Maliki, Sunday Azi and the four match officials involved in a matchday six clash between Sunshine Stars and Abia Warriors.

The NPFL committee requested video footage of the matches where the match officials performed poorly.

The teams involved are Niger Tornadoes and two games of Sporting Lagos.

Also, match-day two clash between Niger Tornadoes and Rivers United, which ended 1-0 in favour of the Tornadoes and matchday four against Bayelsa which also ended in a lone goal in their favour, are part of the games affected.

However, the NPFL committee is expected to investigate further to determine the best disciplinary measures to be issued to the defaulting match officials.

November 7, 2023 Nicolas Jackson’s Hat-Trick Helps Chelsea End Spurs’ Unbeaten Run

Nicolas Jackson’s Hat-Trick Helps Chelsea End Spurs’ Unbeaten Run

A Nicolas Jackson hat-trick and Cole Palmer's spot kick saw Chelsea hammer nine-man Tottenham Hotspur 4-1 in a chaotic Monday night clash.

Dejan Kulusevski's deflected shot put Spurs ahead after six minutes, but it went into reverse at alarming speed when Cristian Romero returned to his old reckless ways.

The Blues were fortunate to escape a sending-off for kicking out at Levi Cowell. Still, they could not resist following through on international teammate Enzo Fernandez, picking up a red card, and allowing Cole Palmer to equalise from the spot in 35 minutes.

Spurs' night went rapidly downhill as Van de Venn collapsed, clutching his hamstring as he raced back to halt a Chelsea attack, before Maddison also went off after appearing to pick up an ankle injury.

Unlike Romero, Destiny Udogie was lucky to escape a red card for an early lunge on Raheem Sterling. Still, a rash, late dive into another tackle early in the second half on the same player left referee Oliver no option but to send him off.

Chelsea took advantage and went 2-1 ahead through Jackson in the 75th minute.

In the 94th minute, Jackson grabbed his second of the night to put Chelsea 3-1 ahead.

The Senegalese then completed his hat-trick as he netted in 97 minutes.

A win for Spurs would have seen them return to the top, as they remain in second place with 26 points, while Chelsea moves up to 10th with 15 points.

November 3, 2023 Sports ministry to focus on grassroots development, says Enoh

Sports ministry to focus on grassroots development, says Enoh

The Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, has said the ministry will focused on the development of sports at the grassroots level.

Enoh made this announcement in Lagos at the Pitstop monthly critique in October. He also discussed his intentions to hasten the nation’s progress in the sports sector.

“Our focus is on grassroots sports development,” declared the minister. We are concentrated on attempting to see how much we can do to help our talented young men and women, who are primarily from the grassroots, understand that they have a future if they work hard and are determined.

“The focus is trying to see how we can get a quick fix of sporting facilities in the grassroots, so that the talented ones can showcase what they do, and we can lead them on and transition them to compete for themselves and for our country. And overall, to see how we can create and achieve a sports revolution in our country.”

Enoh praised the PitStop Lagos Community for encouraging cycling and pledged his support for the activity, expressing the hope that similar programs would be implemented throughout the nation.

PitStop Lagos General Manager Mr. Opeyemi Adegboro stated that the goal of the criterium is to produce professional cyclists and enhance grassroots cycling while training riders for competition.

Adegboro: “We are developing grassroots cycling. We are giving the cyclists opportunity for consistent earning, of which at this event, there’s something to win for the first 15 participants in this race. The prize for the winner is N250,000; the prize for the second position is N150,000, with the third winning N100,00, while the fourth and fifth positions cart home N50,000 and N40,000 respectively. And for the team that won, they will be getting $1000.”

Children, women, professional cyclists, and leisure riders participated in the Access Bank, Craneburg, and Ilubirin-sponsored criterium, which was a 15-loop, about 36-kilometer race held at the Dolphin estate loop.

Isaac Gana, the winner and coach at the PitStop cycling program, expressed gratitude for his triumph.

According to him, the cyclists hope to repeat their success in other competitive events.

November 1, 2023 Inter Miami’s China Tour Canceled, Disappointing Messi Fans

Inter Miami’s China Tour Canceled, Disappointing Messi Fans

Inter Miami's eagerly anticipated plan to play two games in China this month, featuring football legend Lionel Messi, has been called off, the club announced on Wednesday. Inter Miami revealed that the cancellation was at the behest of the tour's promoter, citing "unforeseen circumstances in China" in an online statement.

The tour organizer also confirmed the cancellation in a post on a Chinese social media platform, expressing deep regret for the decision but refraining from providing specific reasons for the change in plans.

Originally, the team was set to play two friendly matches against Chinese Super League teams, with the first match against Qingdao Hainiu scheduled for Sunday and the second against Chengdu Rongcheng three days later.

Lionel Messi, the recent World Cup champion, enjoys immense popularity in China, where the men's national team has faced challenges in recent years and the domestic league has grappled with corruption-related issues. Messi's visit to China has traditionally been met with great enthusiasm from football fans.

In June, Messi led the Argentinian national team to a 2-0 victory over Australia in an international friendly match, delighting thousands of fans in Argentina, known for their blue-and-white striped jerseys.

The 36-year-old football icon was recently awarded his eighth Ballon d'Or trophy in Paris, further solidifying his record as the player with the most Ballon d'Or awards in history, surpassing Cristiano Ronaldo's five.

Messi's arrival at Inter Miami in July substantially impacted the club's global social media following. The team achieved a significant milestone on the field by winning its first trophy with a Leagues Cup triumph in August.

The cancellation of the China tour is undoubtedly disappointing for both Inter Miami and Messi's enthusiastic Chinese fans. However, it underscores the unpredictability and challenges faced in organising international sports events, and fans will eagerly await the next opportunity to see Messi in action.
