Economic Hardship: Protesters Hit Lagos Streets Despite Police Warning

The "Take It Back Movement," a human rights group, took to the streets of Lagos to protest against the escalating food prices and high living costs.

Despite warnings from the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Adegoke Fayoade, the protesters voiced their concerns at Ojuelegba under the bridge area, carrying placards with various messages reflecting their grievances about the current economic challenges.

Juwon Sanyaolu, the TIB National Coordinator, emphasized that the protest symbolized the people's resistance against oppression and hardship. Despite police efforts to deter them, the protesters remained steadfast, marching from Yaba Labor House to Maryland. Sanyaolu announced plans to continue the protest, aligning with the NLC's nationwide mass action to combat the hardship inflicted by the ruling elite.

Their demands include the immediate reversal of fuel subsidy removal, the floating of the naira, and other IMF-imposed policies. The protest also saw participation from civil society organizations such as the Joint Action Front and the Coalition for Revolution. Police officers and members of the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps monitored the demonstration.

Minna Residents Stage Protest Against Soaring Living Costs

On Monday, residents of Minna, the capital of Niger State, took to the streets to express their dissatisfaction with the high cost of living in Nigeria, causing disruptions on major roads in the city. The protesters, comprising women and youths, passionately chanted protest songs, drawing the attention of onlookers, including police officers.

The demonstrators voiced their grievances, citing the escalating prices of essential food items and what they perceived as inadequate government efforts to address the situation. Their decision to block major roads was a collective attempt to make the government listen to their concerns.

Niger State's Deputy Governor, Yakubu Garba, addressed the protesters, acknowledging the challenges faced by families due to the current economic conditions. He assured them that the government is actively working to alleviate the cost of living and mitigate the impact of the removal of petrol subsidies.

In a related development, a war of words erupted between the president and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Sunday. Atiku, the 2023 presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), lamented the prevailing hunger in the country, citing the increasing inaccessibility of basic commodities like bread for average Nigerians in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

In a swift response, Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, accused Atiku of assuming the role of a poor opposition-in-chief. Onanuga defended President Bola Tinubu's economic reforms, acknowledging that they might cause immediate discomfort but asserting that they would ultimately lead to prosperity in the medium and long term.

Youths Protest In Lagos Demand Living Wage And Others

In Lagos, a group of young demonstrators has assembled to voice their disapproval of lawmakers at the National Assembly purchasing Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs).

This gathering, which took place in the Ikeja district of Lagos on Monday, saw the protesters carrying placards bearing slogans like "Fund education, not SUVs," "Pay a living wage, not SUVs," and "Fund hospitals, not SUVs," among others.

The protesters expressed their dissatisfaction with the use of public funds by lawmakers to acquire SUVs, deeming it insensitive in light of the suffering experienced by the majority of the population.

Juwon Sanyaolu, one of the demonstrators, pointed out that workers still strive for a sustainable living wage, with the current N33,000 minimum wage falling short. Meanwhile, lawmakers in the National Assembly are taking delivery of expensive vehicles worth approximately N160 billion.

Sanyaolu questioned the necessity of lawmakers receiving hardship allowances when facing minimal hardships. This criticism comes as reports indicate that members of the Green Chamber have begun receiving their SUVs, while legislators in the Red Chamber are expected to receive their first batch of vehicles this week.

Youths Gather Across The Country To Mark One Year Anniversary Of Endsars Protests

Youths across the country have gathered at different venues to mark the first anniversary of the ENDSARS protest.

In the nation’s capital Abuja, protesters can be seen raising placards, and chanting songs as they gathered at Unity Fountain.

The protesters gathered with a big banner, with the inscription, ‘We never forget. 20.10.20. #EndSARS memorial.’

From Unity Fountain, they proceeded to the national assembly to continue their protest but were denied access by armed operatives of the Department of State Services, soldiers and police officers who blocked the road with their cars.

Here in Lagos, participants joined a car procession at the Lekki tollgate, the epicentre of the protests last year.

Celebrities and activists who turned up at the tollgate with their cars were seen waving Nigerian flags from inside the vehicles and honking the horns while singing solidarity songs.

This is despite a ban on protests in the state and the heavy presence of armed police officers at the tollgate.

However, a journalist was arrested by security operatives after failing to provide a means of identification.

Our correspondent, JOHN EGBOKHAN, who visited the Lekki toll plaza and spoke with some protesters, reports that a van of the state task force was seen driving off with two arrested people in it.

The Lagos State Police Command had warned against any form of protest saying it will only allow indoor and virtual events and later agreed to a vehicle procession.
