Abure Re-Elected As LP National Chairman Despite NLC’s Opposition

Despite opposition from the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Mr. Julius Abure has secured his re-election as the National Chairman of the Labour Party for a second term through unanimous affirmation by delegates.

The announcement was made by the Chairman of the National Convention and Deputy Governor of Abia State, Mr. Ikechukwu Emetu, during the party's national convention held on Wednesday in Nnewi, Anambra State.

Abure has been embroiled in a longstanding dispute with the NLC leadership, led by Joe Ajaero. The NLC had previously called for Abure's resignation as party chairman and urged the immediate constitution of a caretaker transition committee to organize a legitimate and all-inclusive national convention for the party.

On March 20, workers who were denied access to the party office gathered around the premises, chanting songs and demanding the removal of Abure, whom they accused of financial impropriety.

The leadership of rival factions within the party both criticized the NLC's involvement, although they disagreed over the party's leadership. According to the LP, the party's leadership is not accountable to Congress.

Former NLC President, Ayuba Wabba, also weighed in on the crisis, asserting that the LP is answerable to Congress. He emphasized that the Labour Party was formed by the NLC to provide a platform for workers, pensioners, and farmers to exercise their rights, as enshrined in the Constitution.

"The essence of forming the party is to ensure that workers, pensioners, and farmers have a platform to exercise their rights," Wabba stated. "The party was formed by the NLC and registered by the NLC."

Most Govs In Review Committee Not Paying Minimum Wage

The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Joe Ajaero, has criticised the committee set up by the federal government to fashion out a new national minimum wage for the country, stating that most governors of the committee are guilty of not complying with the proposed base pay structure.

Vice President Kashim Shettima inaugurated the 37-member committee in Abuja yesterday, saying the decision aimed to ensure a decent living wage and comply with the existing National Minimum Wage Act of 2019, which will expire in a few months.

Speaking on a monitored program, Ajaero said governors who fully comply with the minimum wage are not adequately represented on the committee.

He questioned the motive of the federal government to bring in those who are not compliant to form the bulk of the membership of the minimum wage committee.

The NLC president also criticised the state of the economy, noting that the Labour Congress is helpless in solving the issue.

NLC/TUC Strike Action Not In National Interest, It Is An Attempt To Blackmail Government, Presidency Says

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has responded to the statement by the presidency which labelled the ongoing strike an “ego-tripping move” intended to “blackmail the government.”

The Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the President, Bayo Onanuga, claimed that the strike was “over a personal matter involving the NLC President, Joe Ajaero.”

Responding in a statement, titled “Bayo Onanuga’s Mischief and the Tragedy of a Nation, the NLC spokesperson, Benson Upah, said the strike is not about ego, or a personal matter involving Ajaero, but rather about the government’s failure to address the plight of workers and Nigerians.

The NLC accused Onanuga of making “sadistic comments” and suggested that his remarks reflected the views of those in power.

The union stated that the government should remain grateful to the organized labour for its uncommon patience with an administration that it said was not prepared for the consequences of its fundamentalist market policies of massive currency devaluation and ‘subsidy’ removal.

Partial Compliance In States As Organized Labour Commences Strike

Day two of the indefinite strike embarked upon by the Organised Labour over the assault on the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Joe Ajaero as well as unmet demands by the federal government.

Nineteen unions have so far directed their workers to comply with the directive of the two labour centres, NLC and the Trade Union Congress, TUC. Though compliance on the first day of the industrial action around the country was poor.

Some of the unions fully on board are the Senior Staff Associations of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria, PASAN and the Nigeria Union of Railway Workers.

Also, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) wrote to its zonal coordinators and chairpersons to comply with the directives of the national secretariat of the NLC.

Inspiration FM visited the University of Lagos, UNILAG and a lecturer who preferred anonymity, said though they received the memo from ASUU, compliance was poor.

However, the Congress of Nigerian University Academics (CONUA) has said that its members are not part of the ongoing nationwide strike as it was not consulted by the organizing bodies of NLC and TUC.
