Lagos By-Election: Vehicular Movement Only Restricted In Surulere—Police


Lagos State Police authorities clarified that the vehicular movement restriction due to a by-election solely applies to the Surulere area where the federal constituency seat election is scheduled.

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, had initially imposed a 12:00 am to 6:00 pm restriction in 26 states with by-elections and run-off polls on Saturday.

Providing additional details, Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, emphasized in a Friday post that the movement restriction is limited to Surulere Federal Constituency I and does not affect other parts of the state as rumoured.

He stated, “CLARIFICATION: In the forthcoming bye-election in Lagos State, restriction of movement is applicable only in the election area, Surulere Federal Constituency I. There is no restriction of movement in other parts of the state.”

The Surulere Federal Constituency 1 vacancy arose when President Bola Tinubu appointed Femi Gbajabiamila, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, as his chief of staff. Besides Surulere, elections are scheduled in various parts of the country, including three senatorial districts, seven federal constituencies, and 28 state constituencies across 80 local government areas nationwide.

INEC To Conduct Re-Run, Bye-Elections February 2024

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has said it will conduct rerun and bye-elections across the country in February next year to fill existing vacancies in the state and federal legislatures.

INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, stated this at a meeting with leaders of political parties in Abuja.

According to Yakubu, the courts ordered the commission to conduct rerun elections in 34 federal and state constituencies: one in the Senate, 11 federal constituencies, and 22 state constituencies.

He stated that the reruns would be held alongside bye-elections, noting that political parties must conduct fresh primaries within the limited time provided by law.

He added that the commission is looking at the first week of February to conduct the re-run and bye-elections.

The Department of State Services (DSS) has warned individuals against making inflammatory statements and false narratives that can cause division and animosity among Nigerians.

The DSS made this known in a statement by its Director, Public Relations and Strategic Communications Peter Afunanya, as the country prepare for the governorship elections in Kogi, Bayelsa and Imo States on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Defence Headquarters has issued a stern warning to gunmen planning to disguise in military wears to cause violence during Saturday’s off-cycle elections.

Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, warned that there would be injurious consequences for their actions.

He issued the warning while briefing journalists on military operations to counter threats of terrorists, bandits/kidnappers, oil theft perpetrators and other forms of insecurity across the country.

INEC Begins Distribution Of Sensitive Materials In Imo

INEC has begun distribution of electoral materials to all 27 Local Government Areas of the Imo State ahead of Saturday’s.

At the Central Bank of Nigeria’s branch in Owerri, the state capital, the electoral body distributed the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System machines, ballot papers and result sheets for the election to the 27 LGAs.

Southeast National Commissioner, Kenneth Ukeagu, briefing journalists on the process, said the commission on top of its plans for the election and doesn’t foresee any hitch.
