24-Year-Old Baker Sentenced to Life Imprisonment for Sexual Assault on Underage Neighbor

In Ikeja, the Lagos State Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court has handed down a life sentence to 24-year-old baker, Adesina Farouk, for sexually assaulting his 15-year-old neighbor. Judge Rahman Oshodi, in a ruling on Monday, found Farouk guilty of defilement, citing compelling evidence presented by the prosecution.

Oshodi emphasized the lack of consent in the survivor’s encounter, noting the forcible nature of the act, which resulted in physical harm and distress. Despite Farouk’s attempts to deceive the court by claiming the survivor was older and they were in a relationship, evidence, including medical reports, indicated otherwise.

The court dismissed Farouk’s assertion of consensual sex, highlighting the severity of the offense and its detrimental impact on the victim’s well-being. Oshodi emphasized the breach of trust and the lasting trauma inflicted on the victim and her family, sentencing Farouk to life imprisonment and ordering his inclusion in the Lagos State Sexual Offences Register.

Oshodi stressed the necessity of deterring such egregious acts, rejecting pleas for leniency and emphasizing the gravity of Farouk’s crime. The prosecution echoed these sentiments, urging the court to impose the full extent of the law on Farouk to serve as a warning to others. Additionally, the court emphasized the importance of registering Farouk as a sexual offender, signaling the seriousness of his crime and the imperative of protecting society’s most vulnerable members.

Alleged $6bn Fraud: Agunloye Asks Court To Decline Jurisdiction

Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie of a Federal Capital Territory High Court sitting in Apo, Abuja, has declined to hear the preliminary objection by former Minister of Power, Dr Olu Agunloye, challenging the power of the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to prosecute him on the alleged 6 billion dollars Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Station fraud.

The judge held that the application needed to be ripe for hearing. He subsequently adjourned the matter till February 26, 2024.

In the preliminary objection, Agunloye seeks an order prohibiting the EFCC from further prosecuting the instant charge against him.

He also said the charges' alleged offences were on his activities as a public officer, where he was alleged to have awarded the contract without budgetary provision, approval, or cash backing.

He further said that another of the charges involved alleged disobedience of the directives of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and forgery of a letter dated May 22, 2003

Court Extends Order Against INEC, PDP Over Defected Rivers Lawmakers

Justice Donatus Okorowo of the Federal High Court in Abuja has extended the interim order stopping the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) from taking any action against the 26 Rivers State House of Assembly members who defected to the All-Progressives Congress (APC).

Justice Okorowo extended the order following an application by counsel for the lawmaker, Steve Adehi, who appeared for the Rivers House of Assembly.

He held that based on Order 26, Rule 10 of the Federal High Court, the court had the discretionary power to grant the plea in the interest of justice.

The judge held that he was persuaded by the reasons given by counsel for the lawmakers that granting the order would be better in the interest of justice.

Justice Okorowo subsequently adjourned the matter to January 24 for a hearing.  On December 15, he granted the ex-parte motion filed by the 26 lawmakers who dumped the PDP for the APC.

The court had restrained INEC from conducting fresh elections to fill the seats of the 26 assembly members.

It also restrained INEC, PDP, and the House of Assembly from declaring their seats vacant and withdrawing their respective certificate of return pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.

Court Freezes 24 Kano Govt Accounts Over N30bn Compensation Dispute

Recently, the Federal High Court in Abuja issued a garnishee order, effectively freezing 24 bank accounts associated with the Kano State Government.

This legal action stems from a suit filed by the Incorporated Trustees of Masalachi Eid Shop Owners and Traders Association, seeking redress for their shops' perceived illegitimate and unjust demolition.

Presiding over the case, Justice I. E. Ekwo delivered the ruling on November 28, 2023, confirming the attachment of funds amounting to N30 billion. The Certified True Copy (CTC) of the ruling, signed by Registrar Chioma Chijioke, highlights the court's intent to satisfy the judgment favouring the shop owners in response to the alleged unlawful demolition carried out by the state in June 2023.

In the court order, Justice Ekwo explicitly stated, "A garnishee order Nisi is at this moment made attaching the funds (present and future) of Kano State Government, Kano State Urban Planning and Development Authority (KNUPDA), and the Attorney General of Kano State to the tune of N30 billion in satisfaction of the judgment."

Furthermore, the court has mandated the garnishees to appear before it and present any justifiable reasons against the order of Nisi becoming absolute. The judge specified that the judgment creditors must serve the defendants and garnishees at least 14 days before the next hearing, scheduled for January 18, 2024.

This ruling follows a prior judgment by the Federal High Court in Kano, where the shop owners were awarded N30 billion as compensation for the demolition of their shops. The affected accounts, encompassing 24 banks, are now subject to the freezing order.
