Five Killed, 70 Houses Razed In Edo, Benue Cult Clashes

Renewed cult clashes in Edo State have resulted in the tragic deaths of three youths, with one victim currently listed in critical condition in a hospital in Benin.

The deceased, identified as Eze, Bobor, and Romeo, met their untimely ends in separate incidents. Eze and Bobor were fatally shot while driving in a Lexus SUV at Obagie in Ikpoba/Okha Local Government Area, while Romeo was gunned down in his betting shop on Second East Circular Road, near the Esigie Divisional Police Headquarters in Benin.

Reports indicate that the clashes were triggered by a land dispute between the Amagba and Obagie communities on the outskirts of Benin.

Confirming the clashes, police spokesperson Chidi Nwabuzor urged residents to provide timely and useful information to aid law enforcement efforts.

Meanwhile, in Veterinary Area, NorthBank, Makurdi, Benue State, a cult clash escalated into communal strife between Tiv and Jukun youths, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and the destruction of 70 houses.

Eyewitnesses recounted how the initial cult clash spiraled into wider violence, leading to property destruction worth millions of naira.

James Dwem, Chairman of Makurdi Local Government Area, appealed for peace as he visited the affected area, urging the warring factions to lay down their arms.

As tensions remained high, Commissioner of Police Emmanuel Adesina was seen patrolling the area with his team of officers to maintain calm and security.

Benue: Fear Grips Residents, Travellers As Kidnappers Occupy Owukpa Communities

Owukpa, situated in the Ogbadibo Local Government Area of Benue State, is currently grappling with a rising wave of kidnappings, transforming once tranquil communities into fearful enclaves. Over ten communities, including Ankpa, Odobe, Umufu, Ubafu, Atamaka, and Ai-Fam, find themselves under siege as criminal elements unleash terror on residents.

Communities such as Aho-Ankpa, Atakama-Ugbugbu, Orokam-Owukpa, and Okpoga-Aifam roads have emerged as notorious hotspots for criminal activities, leading to heightened concerns for the safety of commuters along these routes. Daily Post reports indicate that in the past five months alone, more than 100 individuals have fallen victim to kidnappings, with certain routes proving particularly difficult.

Notably, the Aho-Ankpa road and Atakama-Ugbugbu road have gained infamy for criminal activities, while the Orokam-Owukpa road and Okpoga-Aifam road have witnessed multiple incidents. The situation has become so dire that families are forced to pay ransoms for the safe release of their kidnapped loved ones.

Recent accounts include a family of eight kidnapped on the Atamaka road, facing threats of harm if the demanded ransom was not promptly provided. The victims held captive for days shared harrowing experiences, noting the fluency of the criminals in both Hausa and Fulani languages.

The pervasive fear has prompted Owukpa residents to adopt safety measures, including moving in convoys. Even during festive occasions, such as the yuletide, incidents like the kidnapping of a native named John on his wedding night highlight the vulnerability of the community.

In response to the escalating threats, the women of Owukpa invoked the deity Ekwuanya in 2023 against any son of Owukpa involved in kidnapping activities. However, this spiritual intervention has seemingly had minimal effect, as kidnappers continue to operate with impunity.

The traditional ruler of Ogbadibo, HRH Emmanuel Odeh, expressed deep concern over the security situation, attributing Owukpa's vulnerability to its proximity to neighbouring states, porous borders, and vast forest areas. Odeh criticised the government's inadequate response, citing a shortage of law enforcement personnel in Owukpa and a ban on civilian gun ownership, leaving residents defenceless against well-armed kidnappers.

Amos Agada, the Commander of Constabulary Police in Ehaje II, echoed these concerns, emphasising the lack of safety in Owukpa and the urgent need for government support. He highlighted the inadequacy of weapons for the local vigilante group, stressing the necessity for additional resources to combat the escalating security challenges effectively.

The community leaders and law enforcement officials plead for immediate government intervention, including increased police presence, provision of essential weapons, and comprehensive measures to restore safety and security to Owukpa.

Benue Gov Poll: Appeal Court Dismisses Uba’s Appeal Against Alia, Deputy

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has dismissed an appeal brought before it by the governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Titus Uba, challenging the election of Hyacinth Alia as the elected governor of Benue State.

In a unanimous judgment, the court resolved all three issues formulated for determination against UBA and PDP for various reasons.

Justice Onyekachi Otisi, who delivered the lead judgment, dismissed the allegations of non-qualification by UBA against the deputy governor, Samuel Ode.

He held that the PDP candidate failed to establish forgery of INEC Form EC9 by Ode beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Appellate Court, among other reasons, said the issues of non-qualification are pre-election matters that can only be challenged at a Federal High Court and not at the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, as done by UBA.

Justice Otisi added that a suit to challenge non-qualification could only be instituted within 14 days of the occurrence of the subject matter.

Kidnapped Benue Commissioner Regains Freedom

After enduring ten days in captivity, Mr Mathew Abo, the Benue State Commissioner for Information, Culture, and Tourism, has been set free.

Abo was abducted from his residence in Zaki-Biam on Sunday, September 24, 2023, in the presence of his family members and associates.

Reports indicate that Abo's captors released him in the early hours of Thursday, reuniting him with his family. However, whether the demanded N60 million ransom was paid before his release has not been confirmed.

In a personal statement signed by the Commissioner, he thanked Governor Hyacinth Alia, security agencies, and his colleagues for their concerted efforts to ensure his safe return. Abo emphasised that this harrowing experience would not deter him from his commitment to serving the state.

He stated, "I appreciate all the efforts and prayers that have culminated in my safe release and reunion with my family and society. I wish that my ordeal will lead to renewed efforts to tackle both internal and external security challenges in the state, and I call for the cooperation of everyone in the task ahead."

Abo reassured that he remains resolute in utilising the platform provided by Governor Alia to serve the people of the state as a member of the Benue State Executive Council with a renewed sense of purpose.

He concluded, "I particularly express appreciation to the entire staff of my Ministry and its parastatals as well as others within and outside the state for the unrelenting prayers, and I enjoin them to continue to pray for my success and that of the entire Alia Administration."
