Andy Murray Stuns Top Seed Jannik Sinner To Reach Stockholm Open Quarter-Finals

Andy Murray knocked out top seed Jannik Sinner to reach the Stockholm Open quarter-finals and said "it's probably my best win this season".

The Briton, 34, was fired up and focused against the 20-year-old Italian world number 10 in a 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 win that was one of his finest since his comeback from two hip surgeries.

Murray will face American Tommy Paul for a place in the semi-finals.

"Now I'm in the quarters, I want to have a deep run here," he said.

Speaking in his courtside interview, a delighted Murray added: "I want to keep it going now."

Murray's only other win over a top-10 player this year was against Poland's Hubert Hurkacz in Vienna in October and the Scot has also only reached one other quarter-final on the ATP Tour in 2021 at the Moselle Open in September.

He is joined in the last eight by compatriot Dan Evans, who beat Spain's Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 7-6 (7-5) 6-2.

Andy Murray Defeats Frances Tiafoe In Antwerp

Britain’s Andy Murray showed all of his quality and fight to edge past Frances Tiafoe in a thrilling European Open first-round match in Antwerp.

Murray saved two match points before taking a second of his own to win 7-6 (7-2) 6-7 (7-9) 7-6 (10-8) in a tense and pulsating three hours 45 minutes battle.

The 34-year-old Scot, came from two breaks down – and a set point – to win the opener before his American opponent hit back.

Momentum fluctuated in the deciding tie-break but Murray edged home.

In a mark of their mutual respect, the pair enjoyed a warm hug at the net before Murray stopped his post-match interview to heartily clap his opponent off the court.

Murray will now face Argentine second seed Diego Schwartzman, who received a first-round bye, in the second round on Thursday.

The three-time Grand Slam champion has dropped to 172nd in the world after his points for winning this event in 2019 – which came just nine months after he had major surgery to leave him with a metal hip – coming off the rankings.

But Murray again showed against Tiafoe – a former Australian Open quarter-finalist now ranked 48th – why he still believes he can win more titles on the ATP Tour.

Andy Murray Suffers Defeat To Alexander Zverev At Indian Wells

British Tennis star Andy Murray plans to skip next month's Davis Cup Finals because he is "not sure he deserves to play in that team".

34-year-old Murray, was knocked out of the Indian Wells Masters in the third round on Tuesday night in a 6-4 7-6 (7-4) defeat by Alexander Zverev.

He secured 11 points out of a possible 12 to help Great Britain win the Davis Cup for the first time in 79 years in 2015.

Murray suffered bruising to his pelvis in the 2019 Finals in Madrid, missed the Australian Open and was not able to play again until the tours resumed, after a pause for the pandemic, the following August.

He has been playing better in recent weeks - pushing third seed Zverev close in Indian Wells and taking Stefanos Tsitsipas to five sets in the first round of the US Open. But he is not sure that is good enough for selection into captain Leon Smith's GB squad.

Currently ranked 121st in the world, Murray has accepted a wildcard to play in Antwerp and Vienna over the next two weeks, but says his schedule will depend on his body and his levels of fatigue.

Great Britain will play France and the Czech Republic in Innsbruck in the group stages of the Davis Cup on 27 and 28 November, but the competition does not finish in Madrid until 5 December.

Andy Murray Added To US Open Main Draw

Andy Murray has been added to the US Open main draw after Swiss former champion Stan Wawrinka withdrew.

Murray, who won his first Grand Slam title at the tournament in 2012, withdrew from the men's singles at the Tokyo Olympics with a thigh strain.

Meanwhile, fellow Briton Dan Evans lost in the Canadian Open first round.

And three-time US Open winner Novak Djokovic, 34, pulled out of the Cincinatti Masters warm-up tournament to focus on the US Open.

The Serb is bidding to win all four Grand Slam events in the same year.

"I am taking a bit longer to recover and recuperate after quite a taxing journey from Australia to Tokyo," Djokovic said.

"I'll turn my focus and attention to [the] US Open and spend some more time with family."

Murray, 34, played in the Olympic doubles and lost in the quarter-finals alongside Joe Salisbury.

He made it to the Wimbledon third round in July, losing to Canada's Denis Shapovalov in straight sets.
