The Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Anambra State, has launched an investigation into a physical altercation between a lecturer and a student over a filmed social media content.
According to the university’s spokesperson, Njelita Louis, the institution's management, led by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Joseph Ikechebelu, is committed to ensuring a fair and transparent probe, with appropriate sanctions for anyone found culpable.
The incident, captured in viral videos, involved a third-year student from the Department of History and International Studies, Goddy Precious, who was recording a TikTok video in a university corridor. As she danced in front of her phone, Dr. Chukwudi Okoye, a lecturer from the Department of Theatre Arts, walked past and lightly tapped her on the shoulder to pass through. The student, reportedly angered by the interruption, accused the lecturer of hitting her. The situation escalated as she grabbed the lecturer’s shirt, dragged him in front of other students, and allegedly bit him on the wrist and arm. Throughout the scuffle, the lecturer remained composed.
The videos have since sparked mixed reactions online, with social media users taking sides.
In an official statement, the university reaffirmed its commitment to discipline, self-reliance, and fairness. Prof. Ikechebelu has directed a thorough and impartial investigation to uncover the facts and ensure justice is served.
"We urge all concerned parties and the public to remain calm as we diligently seek the truth. UNIZIK upholds high moral and ethical standards, and there is no place for indiscipline or misconduct within our community," the statement read.
The outcome of the investigation will determine any disciplinary actions to be taken by the university.
