August 24, 2023 Umahi Assures Tinubu’s Prepared To Allocate Funds For High-Quality Road Infrastructure

Umahi Acknowledges Construction Cost as Key Challenge in Road Development

In a recent interview, Umahi openly recognized the substantial hurdle encountered in road development – the ever-increasing construction costs.

On Thursday, he delved into the heart of the matter, stating, "We are meticulously evaluating all these aspects. How can we mitigate these costs? Because at its core, the primary obstacle remains the construction expenditure."

"We're meticulously scrutinizing the financials, even though it appears that a considerable number of contractors might not be inclined towards change. Nonetheless, I will urge and impel them to embrace change – after all, we're all engineers here," he asserted with determination. "I am conveying to them that I am willing to safeguard your profit margins. But let's join forces for the greater good of Nigeria. Let's construct roads that stand the test of time. Interestingly, the government – with the President's backing – is ready to provide the necessary funding," added the former governor of Ebonyi State.

Yet, he couldn't help but lament the higher cost associated with concrete compared to asphalt. He highlighted that the quality of bitumen accessible and imported into Nigeria doesn't hold a candle to the standards set in the 1950s and 1960s.

The newly appointed Minister of Works, who assumed office on Monday, wasted no time getting to work. On Wednesday, he resolutely promised to revamp the Lokoja-Ajaokuta Road's design within two weeks. He affirmed that the rehabilitation of the road would kick off immediately, signalling a proactive stance towards addressing Nigeria's road infrastructure challenges.
