February 19, 2025 UCL: Lookman’s penalty mistake gets criticized by the Atalanta coach

Ademola Lookman has come under fire from Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini for going up to take a penalty during the team’s match against Club Brugge in the UEFA Champions League play-offs.

Lookman is among the worst penalty takers Gasperini has ever seen, according to him.

Tuesday night at the Gewiss Stadium, Atalanta lost the second leg of their play-off match to Club Brugge 3-1.

La Dea lost 5-2 overall and was eliminated from the competition.

In the first half, Club Brugge scored three goals, shocking the hosts.

After the intermission, Lookman was brought in and promptly helped Atalanta close the gap.

However, the Nigerian international’s missed penalty in the 62nd minute ended any chance of a comeback.

After the game, Gasperini remarked, “Lookman is one of the worst penalty takers I’ve ever seen, and he wasn’t supposed to take that penalty.”

“Even in training, he has an incredibly poor record; he converts very few of them.” Lookman took the ball after scoring in a fit of zeal, which I did not enjoy at all, even though Retegui and De Ketelaere were around.
