March 3, 2025 UCL: Dortmund ‘Continues to Improve’ Before Lille Match, Says Coach Kovac

Borussia Dortmund’s head coach, Niko Kovač, has acknowledged that his team still faces a significant journey ahead, despite showing signs of progress, as they prepare to host Lille in the Champions League on Tuesday. The German side, who finished as runners-up in last season’s competition, are currently languishing in 10th place in the Bundesliga, putting their European qualification hopes for next season in jeopardy.

Kovač, who stepped in following Nuri Şahin’s dismissal in January, has brought a degree of stability to the squad. Dortmund recently achieved consecutive league victories for the first time this season, including a weekend triumph over St. Pauli, which marked just their second away win in the Bundesliga this campaign. The former Bayern Munich, Eintracht Frankfurt, and Monaco manager noted the team’s gradual improvement. “We’re building stability step by step, and it’s something we focus on daily—whether it’s on the pitch or in team discussions,” he told the press on Monday ahead of the Champions League last-16 first-leg tie.

While optimistic about the team’s direction, Kovač tempered expectations. “Things are moving forward, but we’re far from our peak. There’s still plenty of work to do. That said, I’m encouraged by how the players are stepping up,” he added.

Dortmund boast an impressive home record, having lost only once in their last 16 matches at the Westfalenstadion. Kovač emphasized the advantage this provides: “Our stadium is a stronghold. It’s a tough place for any opponent—intense and demanding. I’m counting on the crowd to help us leave a mark against Lille.”

Lille, who have claimed the Ligue 1 title twice in the last 14 years, are yet to advance to the Champions League quarter-finals in their history. Despite being the only French side to secure a top-eight finish in the revamped Champions League league phase, they arrive at Tuesday’s match on the back of a heavy 4-1 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in domestic play.
