June 14, 2024 Three Dead As Another Mine Collapses In Niger

Three people have died after a mining pit collapsed in the Adunu community of Paikoro Local Government Area, Niger State. The Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, Abdullahi Baba’arah, confirmed the deaths and reported the rescue of one individual from the site.

Baba’arah noted that the victims were recovered from the pit through community efforts. The collapsed site is reportedly an illegal mining location that primarily attracts women and children from the community.

Earlier, Yusuf Shuaibu, the state chairman of the Miners Association of Nigeria, informed Channels Television that the pit caved in around 10 a.m., trapping an unspecified number of workers. He added that the association, with support from the Niger State government, had mobilized a team for an on-the-spot assessment of the incident.
