September 11, 2024 Tems Responds to Buju Banton’s Criticism of Afrobeats as Shallow

In a recent interview, Tems responded to Buju Banton's criticism that Afrobeats doesn't reflect the realities of its listeners. The Grammy-winning artist explained that Afrobeats, like many other genres, serves a specific purpose, especially for its Nigerian originators. Tems noted that Afrobeats is a form of pop music designed to give listeners a good time, much like pop music from other parts of the world.

She further clarified, "Afrobeats is not reggae; it's not Rock. It's created for a certain purpose, and considering its roots in Nigeria, it's meant for enjoyment. Others can join in that enjoyment."

Buju Banton, during his appearance on the Drink Champs Podcast, had described Afrobeats as a movement disconnected from the realities of its black audience in Africa. He also claimed that Nigerian stars leading the genre's global rise had failed to acknowledge the contributions of Jamaican artists. His comments sparked reactions from various artists, including Jamaican Dancehall star Spice, who disagreed with Banton. Spice pointed out that several Afrobeats artists, like Burna Boy and Falz, produce music with sociopolitical relevance.

During the interview, Tems also addressed rumors that she was pregnant by American rapper Future, dismissing them as outrageous fabrications by gossipmongers.

Additionally, Tems discussed her recently released debut LP, Born In The Wild, which features collaborations with Asake and J Cole.
