October 15, 2024 TCN: Efforts Underway to Restore National Grid

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) announced on Tuesday that efforts to restore the national grid, which collapsed on Monday, are progressing and nearly complete. In a statement, TCN’s Public Affairs General Manager, Ndidi Mbah, explained that the grid experienced a partial disturbance on Monday, October 14, 2024, at around 6:48 pm.

According to the statement, the recovery process began immediately, with Azura Power Station initiating the blackstart. By 10:24 am on Tuesday, the restoration had reached an advanced stage, but encountered a minor setback, delaying progress. Despite the challenge, Mbah assured that TCN continued working on the grid recovery, restoring power to about 90% of its substations across the country.

The company confirmed that electricity supply had been restored to the Abuja region and other key distribution load centers nationwide. Mbah added that the Ibom Gas generating station, which was isolated from the grid during the disturbance, maintained power supply to areas in the South-South region, including Eket, Ekim, Uyo, and Itu 132kV substations.

An investigation into the cause of the collapse will be conducted once the grid is fully restored. This marks another grid collapse in 2024, with previous incidents occurring on February 4, March 28, April 15, July 6, and August 5.

In April, Nafisat Ali, Executive Director of the Independent System Operator (ISO) department at TCN, highlighted several factors contributing to Nigeria's frequent grid failures. She attributed the collapses to issues across all power sectors, including insufficient gas supply, poor coordination between plants and pipelines, and low generation availability.
