February 28, 2025 Supreme Court to Rule on Appeals Over Defection of 27 Rivers Lawmakers

The Supreme Court is set to deliver its judgment on five appeals related to the ongoing crisis in the Rivers State House of Assembly.

After hearing the cases concerning the defection of 27 lawmakers, the apex court reserved its ruling, with the judgment date to be communicated to the parties involved.

One of the key issues in the appeals is Governor Siminalayi Fubara's challenge to the legality of Martin Amaewhule as Speaker of the Assembly, arguing that Amaewhule and 26 other lawmakers lost their positions after allegedly defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

At the last hearing, a panel led by Justice Uwani Abba-Aji dismissed an appeal by Governor Fubara, which challenged the re-presentation of the 2024 state budget before the Assembly under Amaewhule’s leadership. The dismissal followed a request by Fubara’s lawyer, Yusuf Ali, who withdrew the suit, stating that it had become irrelevant.
